About The Position

The Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) is seeking an experienced accounting professional for a full-time Senior Staff Accountant position located in Augusta, Maine. This role offers partial telework with management approval, requiring non-telework days in the Augusta office. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, enjoys independent work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and possesses a high degree of initiative. The Senior Staff Accountant will provide program accounting, cash management, revenue/expenditure control, and other financial accounting services. This includes reviewing and analyzing financial data for accuracy, reconciling complex accounts, developing and recommending system and process changes, and ensuring compliance with state/federal fiscal policies. The position involves preparing cost allocation projections and supporting DHHS teams on administrative cost reconciliation and accounting procedure implementation. The work contributes to the Department's mission of ensuring state and federal funds are utilized effectively to meet the health and welfare needs of Maine's citizens, providing critical services to vulnerable populations.

Requirements

  • Intermediate to advanced education, training, and/or experience in accounting, business administration, financial planning, budgeting, or another related field demonstrating competency in analyzing complex data and records, interpreting policies, rules, and laws, designing operational frameworks, identifying process and procedure deficiencies, and developing practical solutions
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of complex accounting principles
  • Prior experience and/ or education which demonstrates knowledge of GAAP/ GASB, analyzing accounting data and accounting reconciliations
  • A proven ability to complete accounting transactions and account reconciliations

Responsibilities

  • Provide program accounting, cash management and revenue/expenditure control, and other financial accounting services
  • Review and analyze financial data and ensure its accuracy for the processing of cost allocation
  • Reconciles complex accounts, formulates corrections, and adjusting entries
  • Develops and recommends system and process changes through evaluation, analysis, and application of accounting theory
  • Consults with agency program managers and internal/external financial staff to identify business needs, compliance issues, and reporting requirements
  • Ensures compliance with state/federal fiscal policies or other special requirements regarding Cost Allocation and Budgeting
  • Prepares projections for the allocation of costs and budgeting for all DHHS
  • Works independently and supports DHHS teams on reconciliation of all administrative costs and implements accounting procedures for use Service Center wide
