About The Position

The Senior SSD Debug Engineer will triage and debug SSD drive failures for KIOXIA America’s data center SSD product line. The role works closely with Product Support Engineering to resolve customer qualification issues and lead failure root-cause investigations. The engineer tracks multiple issues, coordinates stakeholders in high-pressure situations, and contributes to decisions with a focus on solutions acceptable to customers. The position involves debugging SSD failures across hyperscale server platforms, firmware and hardware analysis, performance troubleshooting, lab reproduction, and development of debug firmware in C. The engineer collaborates with globally distributed engineering teams and customer teams, drives corrective actions through closure, and prepares failure-analysis reports and technical white papers as needed. Travel may be required domestically and internationally. No relocation assistance is provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering or a related field and at least 6 years of relevant technical experience, or a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering or a related field and at least 4 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Proven NVMe and PCIe protocol experience debugging complex SSD issues.
  • SSD firmware architecture and/or validation or test experience.
  • SSD firmware development and debugging experience in C programming.
  • Excellent understanding of debug tools, including PCIe protocol analyzers, oscilloscopes, and Linux tools.
  • Data center or server storage knowledge and experience.
  • Experience with telemetry, host logs such as dmesg and event logs, and firmware trace logs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally when and where needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with open-source SSD tools such as NVMe-CLI and FIO.
  • Good understanding of Open Compute Platform (OCP) specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform root-cause analysis for data center SSD failures on hyperscale server platforms, isolating issues across host, transport, firmware, and media.
  • Drive cross-functional debugging with firmware, platform, and customer teams; define reproducible test cases and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Collaborate with globally distributed engineering teams to resolve technical issues across time zones.
  • Analyze host and telemetry logs, correlate failures with firmware source code and hardware behavior, and drive root cause to closure.
  • Develop debug firmware in C across the SSD firmware stack to accelerate root-cause analysis.
  • Troubleshoot SSD performance issues, reduce tail latencies, and improve IOPS and throughput.
  • Perform lab work to replicate reported issues.
  • Create 8D and failure-analysis reports and explain them to customers.
  • Write product-use-case technical white papers as needed.
  • Travel domestically and internationally when and where needed.

Benefits

  • Career growth and personal development training opportunities.
  • Flexible work-life balance, generous PTO allotment, holiday shutdown, and flexible work options.
  • Medical and non-medical benefits.
