About The Position

L3Harris Communications & Spectrum Dominance (CSD), Mission Critical Communications (MCC), is seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented embedded software design engineer for a cross-functional team. The role has hands-on responsibility across the software development process, from requirements definition through integration and testing, with an emphasis on cryptographic subsystem (CSS) software development. The engineer will apply computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis principles to embedded software for radio and other communications products, including system and software analysis, architecture and design, implementation, testing, documentation, and government certification. The role is based in Columbia, Maryland, follows a 9/80 schedule, and requires travel up to 15% of the time. The candidate must already hold an active U.S. DOD Secret clearance, or one that has been inactive for less than two years and can be immediately reactivated, and must maintain the clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and at least 6 years of relevant experience developing real-time embedded software in C or C++; alternatively, a master's degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 4 years of experience developing and testing software in C or C++.
  • At least 4 years of experience with object-oriented analysis and design (OOA/OOD) software development methodology.
  • At least 4 years of experience across the full software project development lifecycle.
  • At least 4 years of experience producing software development documents, such as design documents and test plans.
  • Active U.S. DOD Secret clearance, or a DOD Secret clearance inactive for less than 2 years that can be immediately reactivated; ability to maintain the clearance.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to convey technical matters clearly and logically.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing bare-metal software on an embedded microprocessor in C, C++, or Rust.
  • Experience designing and developing device drivers.
  • Experience with UML and OOA/OOD software development methodology.
  • Experience across all phases of the software project development life cycle, including software analysis, design, development, testing (including unit testing), and automation tools.
  • Experience with Agile software development using an iterative, time-boxed process such as Scrum.
  • Experience working in collaborative software design, development, and test teams of 3 to 30 engineers.
  • Experience in engineering requirements analysis, development, and testing.
  • Experience with government certification of engineering designs.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, develop, modify, and evaluate embedded computer software for electronic equipment and communications systems in conjunction with hardware product development.
  • Deliver assigned portions of the product development cycle in an Agile Scrum environment, including requirements analysis, high-level and detailed design, implementation, testing, integration, documentation, and government certification of embedded software designs.
  • Determine design approaches and parameters, and analyze software requirements for feasibility within time and cost constraints.
  • Analyze equipment to establish operating data; conduct experimental tests and evaluate results.
  • Perform requirements, use-case, conceptual design, trade-study, test, operation, maintenance, and reliability analyses for radio communications products, internal subsystems, and external systems.
  • Perform functional analysis, requirements allocation, and technical interface definition to translate customer requirements into software development specifications for radios and associated subsystems.
  • Develop block diagrams and interface design specifications.
  • Collaborate with product design, test, manufacturing, logistics engineering, product and program management, other groups, and external customers to define and execute radio product development projects.
  • Prepare design and implementation reviews and oversee configuration management and control of requirements, design documentation, and development software.
  • Present technical briefings and status reviews.
  • Translate customer requirements, including informal requirements, into total systems solutions that balance technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
  • Consult with electrical engineers and other engineering staff to evaluate hardware/software interfaces and overall system operational performance requirements.
  • Develop software system testing procedures and design documentation.
