About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer will lead and contribute to the implementation of the full lifecycle of flight, ground-test, and ground-station software at embedded and application levels. The role includes architecting software systems and understanding the embedded, host, communications, data-storage, computer-vision, FPGA-interfacing, and algorithm-development work required by the team. The engineer will help develop system and mission designs and concepts, and mentor and grow the software engineering team. The team builds spacecraft and space systems that provide mission-critical capabilities for customers operating in challenging space environments. It works across product, engineering, sales, logistics, operations, and mission success to develop, test, deploy, and operate new space capabilities. The software engineering team’s work spans deeply embedded software design, implementation, and debugging; data protocols and RF communications; machine learning, computer vision, and control algorithms for computationally restricted environments; host-side interfaces and data tools; integration with Command and Control software and databases; and software operating at the intersection of hardware, FPGA, and software.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, or a similar engineering or technical field.
  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience directly developing a combination of embedded, host, and product-specific software.
  • At least 3 years leading a software engineering team working on small spacecraft.
  • Experience developing subsystem requirements and interfaces, including mission systems, and developing reusable software architectures to meet those requirements.
  • Experience writing embedded C code and device drivers, and implementing algorithms with limited computational and storage resources.
  • Experience writing host-level code for GUIs, database interaction, and protocol interfaces or translators that connect spacecraft system components, both with and without an explicit ICD.
  • Experience on mature spacecraft development programs, including operational and environmental testing.
  • Experience developing design artifacts such as design-review materials (CoDR, SDR, PDR, CDR, TRR, etc.), design notes, and other documentation that communicates software algorithms and intent.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including presenting developed artifacts.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. in aerospace, mechanical, computer science, or a similar engineering or technical field.
  • Demonstrated high ownership and autonomy across the entire cradle-to-grave lifecycle of a spacecraft or space system.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an extremely fast-paced, nimble environment with programs that have limited, broad Level-0 requirements.
  • At least 3 years working in a classified environment.
  • Experience designing, integrating, and flying CubeSat spacecraft intended to operate in LEO through GEO environments.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a cross-functional team to design hardware-based products.
  • Drive product maturity through rapid prototyping, design verification, and qualification activities.
  • Apply modern space-flight software design standards and guidelines, including fault detection and recovery, error checking, and data redundancy.
  • Architect and design flight, ground, and payload systems to implement mission requirements generically, and communicate goals and taskings to the team.
  • Contribute as an individual engineer and support team members with technical guidance.
  • Translate mission needs into efficient, reusable software products.
  • Lead the establishment of internal guidelines and best practices for space-flight software design, testing, manufacturing, and operations.
  • Conduct peer-level and cross-discipline design reviews.
  • Develop customer-facing system design documentation and presentations.
  • Help drive development, integration, and testing activities to meet schedule.
  • Juggle multiple concurrent projects and customers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Help develop system and mission designs and concepts.
  • Mentor and grow the software engineering team.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of total compensation.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, described as a comprehensive, competitive benefits package available at little to no cost to employees.
