About The Position

Phaidra is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for its Engineering team. Phaidra builds AI-powered control systems for industrial facilities, using reinforcement learning to turn sensor data into decisions and actions and allowing domain experts to configure AI agents without writing code. The company is fully remote and seeks candidates based in the United States or Canada (Eastern or Central time zone) or the UK. In this role, you will lead engineering efforts across your team and adjacent teams, designing and delivering complex systems and products. You will work with engineering, product, and customer-facing colleagues to solve complex problems, influence technical direction, and support the growth of other engineers. You will own systems through production and ongoing operation, with a focus on maintainability, reliability, and performance. The technology stack includes Python, Go, C# (.NET), PyTorch, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Kapitan, GitLab CI, ArgoCD, Atlantis, GCP services, and REST and gRPC microservices. The position is remote and open to people legally authorized to work in the specified locations; Phaidra does not provide employment sponsorship.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating complex production systems, including distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, and data modeling at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects requiring coordination across multiple teams.
  • Strong debugging skills and a pragmatic approach to reliability and performance.
  • Production experience with Python or a similar language and with cloud environments.
  • Experience building, operating, and monitoring modern SaaS applications, APIs, and high-throughput services.
  • Production software engineering experience, including relational and non-relational data modeling, microservices, and event-driven systems.
  • Experience operating production services with observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, Tempo, or equivalent.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and communicate clearly in a fully remote setting.
  • Alignment with Phaidra's values of Agency, Velocity, Craft, and Truth.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the specified location; employment sponsorship is not provided.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with at least one strongly typed language, such as Go, Java, C#, or TypeScript.
  • Experience building multi-tenant systems with high availability, fault tolerance, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with production machine learning systems, including training pipelines, evaluations, or MLOps.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate and lead engineering projects from design through production, owning shipped work and maintaining it over time.
  • Own and review project briefs and technical designs for complex features and systems, making technical decisions and fostering cross-team alignment.
  • Coordinate across teams and ensure the team's work fits into and improves broader systems.
  • Write clean, well-tested code with clear, extensible interfaces while avoiding undue technical debt.
  • Identify friction and improve how the company designs, builds, tests, and operates software.
  • Evaluate technologies and tradeoffs systematically, and extend the team's understanding of its technology stack to meet changing requirements.
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, reviews, and thoughtful feedback.
  • Collaborate with product, design, customer engineering, and other teams to identify technical blind spots, clarify ambiguity, and deliver iteratively.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery and establish effective practices for their use.
  • Lead operational excellence for the team's products, supporting reliability and performance through on-call ownership, tooling, documentation, and CI/CD practices.
