Senior Software Engineer, Edge
About The Position
Persona is hiring a founding member of its dedicated Edge and Networking team. The team owns the full traffic path, from Cloudflare at the edge through ingress and across the service mesh. It operates the traffic layer as a product, with a goal of enabling Persona engineers and their agents to configure, observe, and extend it independently. The role offers ownership from day one and the opportunity to define the team’s practices, technical standards, and vision for a reliable, observable, and extensible traffic layer as Persona expands globally. The engineer will own and evolve edge networking, ingress, DNS, and network-layer observability. They will help improve traffic performance and reliability, support safe and self-service traffic changes, and contribute to the team’s engineering practices across the software development lifecycle. The role calls for an AI-native approach to building and shipping production services, methodical production network troubleshooting, infrastructure-as-code experience, and hands-on networking experience.
Requirements
- An AI-native approach to building and shipping production services, including using AI to solve complex problems through rapid prototyping or agent harnesses with self-repairing feedback loops.
- Experience diagnosing production issues at the network layer, tracing problems through proxies and load balancers to their source, and triaging and fixing incidents.
- Hands-on experience managing infrastructure as code, with attention to change safety and governance.
- Hands-on networking experience in several relevant areas, such as DNS, WAF, service mesh, Kubernetes ingress controllers, and network policies.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Cloudflare Workers, WAF, Access, or Tunnel.
- Experience with Istio or another service mesh in a multicluster environment.
- Experience with GKE or another managed Kubernetes platform at scale.
- Ruby or Rails experience.
- Enjoyment of prototyping new ideas and ways of working, and valuing what experiments teach even when they remain prototypes.
Responsibilities
- Own edge networking configuration, including routing, WAF policy, rate limiting, and certificate management, and help enable engineers to make traffic changes independently.
- Help establish the team’s practices and technical standards across the SDLC, AI tooling, static analysis, chaos engineering, and simulation.
- Evolve ingress controllers, lifecycle, policy, and the Ingress API to make inbound traffic reliable, observable, and self-service.
- Manage DNS across internal clusters and external zones.
- Build network-layer observability for latency, error rates, and routing so problems can be detected and resolved quickly.
- Extend networking into new regions as Persona expands globally, with designs that scale and remain easy to operate.
- Learn the end-to-end traffic path, including Cloudflare, ingress controllers, DNS, and stack networking.
- Ship an ingress-layer change from design to production and prepare a plan to strengthen pre-release testing.
- Recommend where the Istio and multicluster gateway boundary should sit.
- Identify an opportunity to improve network-layer observability and drive the next step.
