Senior Software Engineer, Affirm Bank

Affirm
$173,000 - $255,000Remote

About The Position

Affirm is building its own bank, and this role is within the engineering team that manages it. The team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a small, AI-native team responsible for the systems powering Affirm's bank. This includes vendor-integrated banking infrastructure, durable workflows, the data platform, and operational tooling. The engineer will collaborate with other senior engineers and have direct interaction with senior bank and Affirm leadership. Key objectives include launching the bank's deposit product, driving loan originations through the bank entity, and enabling card issuing. This is a unique opportunity to be among the first engineers on Affirm's bank, working with the speed and autonomy of an early-stage team while benefiting from Affirm's established brand, distribution, and customer base. The role offers broad responsibilities and the chance to significantly impact the bank's future through the systems built and standards set.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience with strong, hands-on builder credentials and a proven track record of end-to-end ownership through launch and operations.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, ability to move fast, ask critical questions, and take ownership proactively while balancing speed with engineering judgment.
  • A bias toward simplicity and experience operating in or building towards a lean engineering culture with high standards and a focused surface area.
  • Proficiency in leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, Codex, agentic workflows) and a drive to use them for code quality and velocity.
  • Strong systems thinking skills across public cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and cloud data platforms (Snowflake or comparable).
  • Experience in regulated environments such as banking, payments, securities, or healthcare, including work with examiner-facing documentation and decisions.
  • Ability to serve as the technical representative for work to non-engineering stakeholders (Compliance, Risk, Finance, legal counsel, examiners) and document decisions for audit review.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical, regulatory, and operational concepts to executives and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working within a bank, neobank, Banking-as-a-Service provider, card issuer/processor, or a fintech with a chartered bank subsidiary.
  • Direct experience with a de novo bank launch, an early-stage bank buildout, or a greenfield regulated platform.
  • Hands-on experience with a bank core, card processing/issuer processor integration, or digital bank experience integration.
  • Hands-on experience setting up a greenfield cloud organization, including IAM model and data platform, under strict security protocols.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks such as FDIC examinations, GLBA/Reg P, BSA/AML, Reg E, Reg DD, Reg Z, model risk, and third-party risk management.

Responsibilities

  • Own bank systems end-to-end, including design, build, integration, operation, and incident response for core technical areas like cloud infrastructure, data platform, workflow orchestration, core banking configuration, CI/CD, networking, and the Bank ↔ Affirm Inc integration.
  • Act as a force multiplier on a small team by setting and improving code review and design standards, enhancing examiner-readable documentation, and increasing team effectiveness.
  • Leverage AI tools and agentic workflows for code generation, design review, runbook creation, and operations to drive outcomes.
  • Manage one or more third-party vendor relationships end-to-end, including integration, operations, escalation, and audit, given the vendor-leveraged nature of the bank's tech stack.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit to integrate compliance from the outset, producing documentation and decisions suitable for examiner and audit review.
  • Establish the operational posture for work, including setting up monitoring, alerting, runbooks, and practices to ensure system reliability, observability, and audit readiness.
  • Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and constraints clearly to non-engineering stakeholders such as bank executives, Compliance, and Risk, as well as engineers outside the bank.
  • Contribute to talent growth by establishing engineering practices and standards, providing feedback, mentoring peers, and leading by example as new engineers join the team.

Benefits

  • 100% employer-subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents
  • Flexible spending wallets for technology, food, lifestyle, and family formation
  • Competitive vacation and holiday schedules
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan
  • Monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending
  • Equity rewards offered by Affirm Holdings, Inc. (parent company)
