About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer, Advanced Technology is a highly experienced individual contributor responsible for developing, integrating, and testing software for advanced technology prototypes and proofs of concept supporting surgical robotics and digital orthopedic applications. This role focuses on hands-on design and implementation of embedded, application, and controls software for foundational technologies and early feasibility assessments. This position partners closely with the Software Lead, systems and test engineers, controls, mechanical, electrical, and clinical teams to translate prototype requirements into robust, working software components with limited guidance. The role drives rapid learning and iteration cycles typical of early-stage advanced technology development, and provides technical input into software architecture decisions. While this role does not directly develop commercial products, it applies sound software engineering practices, code quality standards, and risk-based thinking to prototype and proof-of-concept software. Responsibilities include designing and implementing algorithms, integrating sensing and control components, defining and executing unit/integration test strategies, and documenting software behavior and known limitations. This role requires strong hands-on coding, debugging, and design skills, the ability to work independently across ambiguous early-stage concepts and experimental platforms, and comfort operating in a fast-paced, agile environment where priorities may evolve and rapid pivots may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development, including embedded, application, or controls software.
  • Experience developing maintainable software with accompanying technical documentation, including design notes, code-level documentation, and verification evidence.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and application development using the Qt framework; proficiency in Python or other relevant programming languages is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, version control (e.g., Git), and unit/integration testing practices.
  • Solid understanding of embedded systems and real-time software concepts.
  • Working knowledge of medical device software standards (e.g., IEC 62304) and cybersecurity principles.
  • Excellent technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Strong hands-on mindset, collaborative working style, and intellectual curiosity for emerging technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced, agile team environment.
  • Ability to provide informal technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Fact-based decision making
  • Software testing and debugging practices
  • Basic safety awareness of Class II or Class III medical devices
  • Understanding of embedded/real-time software concepts

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of 3D geometry, spatial transformations, computer graphics, or related mathematical concepts is preferred.
  • Experience with Class II or III medical devices, surgical robotics, or digital surgery is preferred.
  • Experience with embedded systems, sensing technologies, tracking systems, or controls integration is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, and debug software for advanced technology prototypes, including embedded, application, and controls software components.
  • Translate prototype requirements and technical specifications, in collaboration with the Software Lead and systems engineers, into robust software architecture and code with limited guidance.
  • Integrate software with sensing, tracking, actuation, and user interaction components on experimental platforms.
  • Define and execute unit tests, integration tests, and automated test scripts to verify software functionality.
  • Collaborate with systems, test, controls, mechanical, and electrical engineers to support prototype integration and feasibility studies.
  • Lead code reviews and help establish coding standards and version control best practices within the team.
  • Troubleshoot software defects and test anomalies, performing root cause analysis and proposing corrective actions.
  • Document software design decisions, known limitations, and test results to support feasibility evidence packages.
  • Document software design decisions, code-level implementation details, known limitations, and test results to support feasibility evidence packages and maintain clear documentation associated with developed code.
  • Apply working knowledge of medical device software standards, cybersecurity, and risk management principles to prototype work.
  • Contribute to technical reviews of prototypes, providing input on software architecture, implementation feasibility, and constraints.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-paced, agile advanced technology environment, adapting quickly as priorities evolve.
  • Support the Software Lead in planning software development activities, including task estimation, technical documentation, and mentoring of junior engineers.

Benefits

  • an annual bonus with set target (% of pay) depending on pay grade / location, where the actual amount is based on the employees’ and companies’ performance of the previous calendar year, or sales commissions.
  • vacation days
  • parental leave for a minimum of 12 weeks
  • bereavement leave
  • caregiver leave
  • volunteer leave
  • well-being reimbursement
  • programs for financial, physical and mental health.
  • service anniversary and recognition awards
