Senior Software Engineer, Core Infrastructure

Oracle•Seattle, WA
•$79,200 - $209,500

About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer will develop and operate Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Workflow, a Tier 0 service that enables OCI services to execute distributed, multi-step work in a fault-tolerant manner. The engineer will build features that improve platform resilience and efficiency, contribute to the launch of a new V2 version, and support the service’s operational excellence as OCI scales. The role involves designing, implementing, testing, and optimizing distributed-system components for scalability, reliability, correctness, and availability. It includes using distributed state-management and data-plane platforms for large-scale retrieval, storage, and processing; building redundancy, replication, failover, retries, circuit breakers, and timeouts; and creating tests, alarms, dashboards, telemetry, runbooks, and automation to detect, troubleshoot, and recover from issues. The engineer also supports incident response and root-cause investigations, applies security controls and remediation, maintains infrastructure automation, follows change-management practices, and collaborates across teams. The role is an IC3 individual-contributor position.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement distributed-system components that support horizontal and vertical scaling, including use of distributed state-management tools.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and use data-plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Implement scalability requirements for assigned components and review team members’ implementations for scalability.
  • Implement performance and load testing.
  • Collaborate on fault-tolerant components that support in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Apply recovery-oriented computing principles and implement retries, circuit breakers, and timeouts to handle disruptions and network unreliability.
  • Implement tests and alarm configurations to proactively detect and address issues and failures.
  • Draft and execute runbooks and operational procedures to support recovery from failures.
  • Build and customize dashboards, telemetry, and alerting to monitor component health.
  • Design and implement feature requirements and tests, including fault-injection and brown-out scenarios, and use data replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in system components; implement strategies to avoid customer maintenance windows.
  • Design and implement automation scripts and tools for operational troubleshooting.
  • Participate in operational support rotations, incident response, and root-cause investigations.
  • Apply security measures in multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls, and implement remediation plans.
  • Collaborate to support compliance with industry standards and regulations and keep documentation current.
  • Maintain automation scripts and tools, including Infrastructure as Code, for cloud infrastructure management.
  • Follow change-management plans for application patching, updates, and rollbacks.
  • Track timelines and complete work in alignment with project requirements; prioritize and adjust work as resources or timelines change.
  • Collaborate across teams, understand stakeholder and customer needs, listen to diverse perspectives, and build effective partnerships.
  • Identify and address standard and non-standard issues, escalate more complex issues as appropriate, troubleshoot using information from multiple sources, and contribute to knowledge sharing.
  • Continue developing skills and knowledge, seek feedback and training, stay current with industry trends, and share learning with team members.
  • Recommend improvements to team processes, protocols, and workflows, seeking input on alternative approaches.
