Senior Software Engineer - Project Solara

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $261,000

About The Position

Help build Project Solara, a chip-to-cloud platform for agent-first devices that brings together software, hardware, cloud services, and AI. The Applied Sciences Group (ASG) is the multidisciplinary product engineering, research, and incubation team developing the platform and its device experiences. As a Senior Software Engineer on the ASG team, you will design, implement, and integrate software across Android-based devices and embedded platform components. You will apply expertise in device hardware, wireless technologies, and system protocols to deliver reliable connectivity and enable device capabilities. The work spans operating-system, firmware, hardware, driver, and service boundaries, with particular emphasis on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, USB, audio, sensors, and related device interfaces. You will collaborate with internal engineering teams, silicon partners, original equipment manufacturers, and component vendors to bring up hardware, diagnose system-level issues, improve platform architecture, and take device changes from design through validation and release.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including C, C++, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 8+ years of technical engineering experience coding in C, C++, or Python; or a master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 6+ years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience developing native or system software using C, C++, Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Linux, or another embedded operating system.
  • Experience with wireless connectivity or device protocols, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, USB, TCP/IP, audio, sensors, or related hardware interfaces.
  • Experience bringing up hardware and diagnosing complex issues across operating-system, driver, firmware, chipset, peripheral, and hardware boundaries.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, optimize, debug, and maintain software across Android-based devices, embedded platform components, hardware abstraction layers, and native system services.
  • Drive the design and integration of device connectivity capabilities, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, USB, and other hardware interfaces and communication protocols.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, security, cloud-service, and product engineering teams to define requirements, identify dependencies, and develop technical designs for new device capabilities.
  • Lead hardware and platform bring-up activities, analyze interactions across operating-system, driver, firmware, chipset, antenna, peripheral, and service layers, and drive complex issues to resolution.
  • Use logs, traces, protocol analysis, telemetry, and hardware diagnostic tools to investigate connectivity, performance, power, reliability, and interoperability issues.
  • Develop and improve automated verification, hardware-in-the-loop testing, diagnostic tooling, and continuous integration infrastructure for device and connectivity scenarios.
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers, contribute to project and release planning, and drive assigned capabilities through design, implementation, integration, validation, and release.
