Battelle•Columbus, OH
•$128,800 - $183,600•Hybrid

About The Position

Battelle's Advanced Microsystems Solutions (AMS) organization is seeking a Software Engineer to develop next-generation radio frequency (RF) and spectrum operations solutions. The role focuses on designing and developing software applications, signal-processing algorithms, and mission systems that help customers sense, analyze, exploit, and operate in contested electromagnetic environments. The engineer works on multidisciplinary teams with software engineers, RF engineers, systems engineers, data scientists, and researchers. The work supports spectrum awareness, signal intelligence, communications resilience, electronic attack, and electronic support missions, and spans the full lifecycle from concept development and prototyping through integration, testing, deployment, and customer transition. The position is based at Battelle’s offices in Columbus, Ohio. The role includes developing RF and spectrum software, algorithms, and software-defined radio integrations; supporting spectrum operations and electronic warfare capabilities; and contributing to system architecture, customer engagement, and technical leadership activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience developing software for complex technical systems.
  • Proficiency in one or more of C++, Python, Java, or Rust.
  • Experience developing software in Linux environments.
  • Understanding of RF communications systems, digital signal processing, wireless networking, and electromagnetic spectrum concepts.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Secret or Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Experience with GNU Radio, Redhawk, MATLAB/Simulink, Kubernetes, Docker, or cloud-native architectures.
  • Familiarity with RF modeling and simulation, electronic warfare systems, SIGINT systems, spectrum-monitoring technologies, or RF testing and instrumentation.
  • Experience with software-defined radio platforms such as Ettus USRP, NI SDR, Per Vices, or custom SDR hardware.
  • Knowledge of phased-array systems, beamforming, and advanced sensing technologies.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML techniques into RF and signal-processing applications.
  • Additional desired technical skills include software architecture, C++, Python, Linux, digital signal processing, software-defined radio, RF communications, electronic warfare, electromagnetic spectrum operations, signal intelligence, cloud computing, containerization technologies, machine learning, data analytics, DevSecOps, and Git version control.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications for advanced RF, communications, and spectrum operations systems.
  • Develop scalable software architectures for real-time signal processing and mission applications.
  • Design and implement APIs, services, and data-processing pipelines for sensor integration and spectrum exploitation workflows.
  • Develop software using modern software engineering practices, DevSecOps methodologies, and Agile frameworks.
  • Develop and optimize digital signal-processing algorithms for signal detection and classification, modulation and demodulation, direction finding and geolocation, spectrum monitoring and analysis, waveform processing, and interference mitigation.
  • Implement algorithms using C++, Python, and other high-performance programming languages.
  • Evaluate algorithm performance with simulated and operational datasets.
  • Develop software applications for software-defined radio platforms and RF sensor systems.
  • Interface software with RF front ends, communications systems, phased-array systems, and embedded processing hardware.
  • Integrate third-party and custom RF technologies into mission systems.
  • Support laboratory and field-testing activities to validate system performance.
  • Develop software for electromagnetic spectrum awareness and spectrum management capabilities.
  • Contribute to solutions for electronic support, electronic attack, and electronic protection missions.
  • Create visualization, analysis, and operational decision-support tools for complex RF environments.
  • Support mission-planning, execution, and analysis workflows for spectrum operations.
  • Participate in system architecture development, trade studies, and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with customers and program teams to translate operational requirements into technical solutions.
  • Support proposal development, technology roadmaps, and business growth activities.

Benefits

  • Flexible compressed work schedule, with most of the team receiving every other Friday off.
  • Hybrid work flexibility, typically 60% in-office and 40% remote, with Monday and Tuesday as common in-office days, dependent on team and position needs.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage with wellness incentives and benefits, plus optional supplemental benefits.
  • Coverage for partners, gender-affirming care and health support, and family formation support.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan: for most employees, Battelle contributes 5% whether or not the employee contributes and matches employee contributions on top of that.
  • Tuition assistance for higher education.
