About The Position

Kingland is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build and maintain backend services for its platform, which financial institutions use to manage entity data for risk and compliance decisions. The role works primarily with Java and Spring, alongside PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, caching, and AWS messaging. The engineer owns scoped features and reliability and performance improvements from requirements through production deployment, contributes to technical design decisions, and occasionally contributes to frontend work. The position collaborates with an experienced team and cross-functional partners in two-week sprints. It is hybrid, with office options in Ames, Iowa; Clear Lake, Iowa; and Fort Myers, Florida. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future immigration sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience.
  • Backend development experience in Java with Spring or Spring Boot, or strong experience in another backend language such as Go or C, with willingness to work primarily in Java and Spring.
  • Regular use of automated testing, including edge cases and failure behavior, with attention to reliable execution in CI.
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices and responsible handling of sensitive data.
  • Ability to reason about data changes, failure paths, and concurrent requests, and to design tests that verify intended behavior.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical tradeoffs and incorporating review feedback.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future immigration sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with PostgreSQL queries and indexes, hierarchical or bulk datasets, Redis caching, or search indexing with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch.
  • Experience with asynchronous processing, including message queues, retry/backoff, duplicate-safe processing, ordering, dead-letter handling, or transaction-aware dispatch.
  • Experience with AWS services, Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, Gradle, MyBatis, or Flyway.
  • Experience with performance/load testing and operational diagnostics using logs, correlation IDs, metrics, alarms, and runbooks.
  • Experience with Angular/TypeScript or another modern frontend framework, and safe incremental framework and library upgrades.
  • Experience in banking, financial services, audit, or another regulated domain.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain secure, testable Java/Spring services within the existing architecture and identify opportunities to improve shared patterns.
  • Preserve correct behavior across APIs and asynchronous processing, including edge cases, concurrent updates, and transaction boundaries.
  • Write automated unit and integration tests that verify intended behavior.
  • Improve structured logging, metrics, alarms, and runbooks to detect problems earlier and improve diagnosis and recovery.
  • Investigate performance issues with the team and measure the effects of changes to queries, caching, or batching using representative data.
  • Collaborate with teammates, product owners, and client-facing teams in two-week sprints from requirements review through implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Contribute to design decisions that influence technical direction.

Benefits

  • Flexible health and welfare benefits.
  • Wellness and lifestyle benefits.
