Senior Software Engineer, Ecosystem Events

GitHub, Inc.•UNAVAILABLE, UNAVAILABLE

About The Position

As a software engineer on GitHub’s Ecosystem Events team, you will build and operate the webhooks platform that powers third-party integrations and many of GitHub’s flagship products. You will work with a distributed team on event-driven systems developers use to integrate with GitHub. You will design, implement, ship, and support improvements to webhook services and APIs; improve the platform’s ability to handle growing traffic; investigate delivery problems; and make services easier to operate. The primary technology stack is Go and Ruby. You will collaborate with teams responsible for databases, queues, networking, and compute infrastructure to deliver webhooks reliably at scale. The team works remotely and relies on clear written communication and asynchronous collaboration. The role includes technical leadership, mentoring, and participation in on-call and first responder rotations. You will also write architecture proposals and use experiments and prototypes to assess approaches to scaling the systems.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience in software engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline, with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software in a programming language such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python; or an accepted degree-and-experience alternative or equivalent experience.
  • Alternatively, an associate’s degree in a listed or related field and at least 5 years of relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree in a listed or related field and at least 4 years; a master’s degree in a listed or related field and at least 2 years; or a doctorate in a listed or related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience maintaining highly available, high-volume platforms.
  • At least 2 years of experience building and maintaining event-driven systems.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of experience with one or more scripting languages, such as Bash or Python.
  • At least 2 years of experience using general-purpose programming languages, such as Go or Ruby.
  • At least 3 years of experience with cloud environments and/or Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) concepts.
  • Experience with queuing or streaming systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience with relational or distributed databases.
  • Experience working on distributed teams, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and ship improvements to GitHub’s webhook services and APIs.
  • Build and maintain event-driven systems that handle high volumes of traffic reliably.
  • Debug problems across service boundaries and improve the tooling and observability needed to investigate them.
  • Work with infrastructure partners to improve platform performance and resolve dependencies.
  • Support teams across GitHub as they build webhook integrations.
  • Provide technical leadership and help other engineers grow through mentoring, pairing, and code reviews.
  • Maintain service health and respond to production problems through on-call and first responder rotations.
  • Write architecture proposals and use experiments and prototypes to evaluate approaches to scaling systems.
  • Write maintainable code, test it, and use CI/CD pipelines to deliver changes safely.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay.
  • Generous learning and growth opportunities.
  • Benefits to support employees wherever they are.
  • Certain roles are eligible for annual bonus and stock; eligibility and allocation depend on the role and individual impact.
