Software Engineer

Ralliant•Boxborough, MA

About The Position

Setra is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to deliver reliable products used in safety- and critical environments. The role designs, develops, and maintains software across embedded Linux systems and related products, emphasizing reliability, diagnosability, and secure, maintainable engineering practices. The engineer develops product features and production-quality C++ components for edge and embedded Linux systems, supports device build and release workflows, and may develop embedded user interfaces or operator-facing tools. The role also implements and troubleshoots industrial communications and building-automation integrations, works with hardware, quality, and product teams on requirements and verification, and improves development and release practices. It supports field and manufacturing issue resolution through reproduction, root-cause analysis, fixes, documentation, and controlled releases.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated professional software engineering experience, typically 6 years, including significant experience delivering production systems in C++ on Linux.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and Linux development and debugging, including command-line workflows and scripting such as shell or Python where used.
  • Experience with pub/sub messaging fabrics such as MQTT, Kafka, or Rabbit.
  • Experience developing Linux applications with Qt, including UI and/or tooling for embedded devices.
  • Experience with modern build systems and packaging workflows for embedded targets, such as CMake, cross-compilation, and ARM build targets.
  • Proven experience collaborating across software, hardware, and quality disciplines in product environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with industrial and building communication stacks and protocols, including BACnet and Modbus, and ability to diagnose network and protocol issues.
  • Experience with IoT or edge-gateway integration patterns and multi-protocol systems.
  • Experience with security validation practices and tools, such as SAST, DAST, and threat modeling.
  • Exposure to web-facing components or embedded web UIs that complement edge products.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement product software features across edge and embedded Linux components and integrations for environmental and power monitoring products, including network and protocol interactions.
  • Deliver production-quality C++ components on Linux, including performance tuning, memory and resource optimization, and maintainability.
  • Contribute to device build and release workflows, including cross-compilation and packaging patterns such as CMake-based builds and ARM targets.
  • Develop or maintain embedded UIs and operator-facing tools where applicable, including Qt-based applications and embedded web applications for Linux targets.
  • Implement and troubleshoot industrial communications and building-automation integrations using industry protocols; inspect traffic and diagnose field issues.
  • Collaborate with hardware, quality, and product teams to translate requirements into robust designs and drive verification and validation expectations in regulated or reliability-focused environments.
  • Improve engineering effectiveness through development practices such as code reviews, automated checks, CI/CD direction, and repeatable build and test workflows.
  • Support field and manufacturing issue resolution by reproducing issues, performing root-cause analysis, delivering fixes, documenting them, and following controlled release processes.
  • Contribute sound technical decision-making in architecture discussions, coding standards, and secure development practices.
  • Promote lean agile processes, clear communication, and delivery of commitments.
  • Drive software excellence, product robustness, and security.
