Senior Software Engineer

Remitly•Seattle, WA

About The Position

Remitly’s Transaction Experience (RTE) team owns the systems that accept, orchestrate, and track customer remittances. Its services provide the transaction gateway, processing, delivery estimates, and search/read capabilities used by customer-facing products and internal teams across millions of customers and more than 175 countries. Because these systems affect customers’ money, the team prioritizes reliability and operational excellence at scale. The team is building an API-first Transaction Platform that enables product teams to integrate independently and at scale. The Senior Software Development Engineer will own one or two key pillars of the transaction experience, such as delivery estimates or new platform capabilities, and help other teams build reliable, transparent transaction experiences. The role leads initiatives spanning multiple engineers and teams and raises standards for quality and operational excellence. The position is part of an AI-forward engineering culture. Engineers are expected to use AI tools across coding, testing, debugging, and documentation while remaining accountable for the correctness of their work. Senior engineers evaluate AI-generated output and coach peers in responsible AI use. Corporate team members are expected to work in the office at least 50% of the time monthly, typically three days per week. Managers may set higher in-office expectations based on team needs.

Requirements

  • A degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 6 years of professional software development experience building and operating production backend systems.
  • At least 1 year leading features involving multiple engineers, including breaking ambiguous, large projects into executable workstreams.
  • Expertise in Go, Kotlin, or a similar language such as Java, Python, or C++.
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed backend systems on AWS, including high-throughput, low-latency services.
  • Expertise with large-scale database systems such as MySQL and DynamoDB.
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Prometheus or VictoriaMetrics, CI/CD, and infrastructure tooling, including improving deployment, testing, logging, and monitoring practices.
  • Experience migrating or decommissioning production systems while they remain in use.
  • A track record of technical architecture and system design decisions.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with payments, fintech, or other domains where data correctness and auditability are critical.
  • Experience with durable workflow orchestration, such as Temporal.

Responsibilities

  • Improve the accuracy, latency, and reliability of customer delivery-time estimates.
  • Help peer teams migrate to the new platform’s APIs without interrupting production traffic.
  • Lead complex, multi-engineer initiatives end to end: clarify requirements, divide work into parallel workstreams, estimate, and guide delivery.
  • Write technical specifications, lead design reviews, and contribute to cross-team technical designs.
  • Deliver idempotent, well-tested, observable, documented, scalable, and resilient services and APIs.
  • Own service operational health, including on-call responsibilities, SLOs, incident response, and root-cause resolution.
  • Incorporate AI-assisted development into estimates; assess AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability; and coach peers on responsible AI use.
  • Drive task breakdown, estimates, and tradeoff discussions with product managers, and partner with the manager on technical direction and the team roadmap.
  • Work with product managers and engineers across Remitly to understand consumer needs and develop reliable technical solutions.
  • Mentor engineers through code and design reviews, interviews, and onboarding, and raise the team’s technical bar.
