Sr. Software Engineer(C++/Python)

Medtronic•Newton, MN
•Onsite

About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer (C++/Python) will work on Medtronic’s Affera Mapping and Ablation System Software Team, developing software for medical technology used to treat cardiac arrhythmias. The role focuses on designing, developing, and testing intuitive, high-performance, real-time visualization applications and owning critical software features from concept through production. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and build interfaces that connect desktop applications with medical-device hardware. The role includes developing reliable network and serial communication interfaces, integrating asynchronous device communication with UI and application data layers, and addressing performance, responsiveness, and communication failures. It also involves testing software in normal and fault conditions, documenting designs and workflows, improving development processes, and participating in pre-clinical in-vivo system evaluations. The position works onsite at least four days per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or a PhD with 0 years of relevant experience.
  • Expertise working in Python/C++ environments, ideally with ROS or device-level communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing Ethernet/TCP/IP communication interfaces using socket programming, including connection management, message serialization, and certificate-based secure communication.
  • Experience implementing serial device interfaces such as RS-232 or USB-to-serial, including baud rate and port configuration, message framing, checksum validation, flow control, and timeout handling.
  • Ability to troubleshoot network and serial communication issues using packet captures, serial logs, and device simulators, with understanding of asynchronous I/O and thread-safe integration with desktop UI applications.
  • Experience in desktop UI development such as Qt/QML, PyQt, OpenGL, WPF, or similar.
  • Experience building real-time or data-rich interfaces for technical or clinical applications.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and design patterns.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to addressing challenges.
  • Experience with software version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience working with UI designers and implementing UI designs in Figma or similar.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms and services such as AWS or Azure.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tools and practices, including automated testing and deployment.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, real-time visualization applications in a collaborative team environment.
  • Own key software features and drive their development from concept through production.
  • Collaborate with hardware, QA, DevOps, and other cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and high-quality software delivery.
  • Design, implement, and maintain network and serial communication interfaces between desktop applications and connected hardware.
  • Integrate asynchronous device communication with UI and application data layers, maintaining responsiveness through buffering, thread synchronization, timeout handling, connection monitoring, and recovery from communication failures.
  • Optimize software performance for low latency, high reliability, and scalability in a regulated environment.
  • Implement and maintain software testing strategies, including unit, integration, and automated testing of communication interfaces under normal and fault conditions.
  • Document software designs, coding practices, and development workflows.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of team development processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Attend and participate in pre-clinical in-vivo system evaluations.
