About The Position

General Motors is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Autonomous Vehicles Data team. The role designs, develops, maintains, and deploys data platforms that support self-driving vehicle technology, including services used for autonomy model training, data mining, labeling, and replay. The engineer owns end-to-end technical projects and key technical decisions, helps shape the team’s strategic roadmap, and works with ML and Data Engineers to turn user needs into requirements and self-service capabilities. The role also supports operational excellence through service-level objectives and indicators, monitoring, incident response, and ongoing service optimization. The position is hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times a week or at another frequency set by their manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or another relevant field.
  • At least 5 years of experience building and supporting large-scale data platforms, including deploying high-performance services that support petabytes of weekly data serving.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Java, C++, Go, or Python, with a track record of designing and implementing robust distributed systems.
  • Experience deploying and managing services on at least one major public cloud provider: Azure, GCP, or AWS, using automation and observability to support operational excellence.
  • Experience optimizing services for cost efficiency, performance, and reliability.
  • Experience with multi-language hosted-services architecture and managing the full operational lifecycle of systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing data processing frameworks such as Beam or Spark and serving layers optimized for high-throughput, low-latency delivery.
  • Passion for self-driving technology and its potential impact on the world.
  • Experience delivering petabyte-scale ingestion, processing, and serving architectures at 100+ petabytes.
  • Experience with SQL engines or queries.

Responsibilities

  • Own and improve deployment of Autonomy Data platform services used in AV model training, mining, labeling, and replay.
  • Champion operational excellence by defining and measuring SLOs and SLIs, and leading incident and support response.
  • Collaborate with ML and Data Engineering stakeholders, translate their needs and pain points into requirements, build self-service capabilities, and drive adoption.
  • Deliver end-to-end technical projects, own major technical decisions and tradeoffs, and contribute to the team’s strategic roadmap.
  • Participate in team planning, code reviews, and design discussions.
  • Conduct technical interviews, onboard new team members, and mentor junior engineers.
  • Optimize services for cost efficiency, performance, and reliability, and manage their operational lifecycle.
