Senior Software Engineer, Algorithms Engineering
About The Position
Flock Freight is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Algorithms Engineering Team, reporting to the Manager of Algorithms Engineering. The role involves designing, building, testing, and maintaining web applications with Java, React, and TypeScript, as well as developing high-performance, scalable, and maintainable REST and gRPC APIs. The engineer will own features throughout their lifecycle, including production monitoring, debugging, and iterative improvements, and will collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver features that meet customer needs. The position also contributes to system architecture, application state and relational database management, code quality, code reviews, and technical recommendations about new development, refactoring, and third-party or open-source integrations. Production support includes troubleshooting, root cause analysis, performance optimization, and participation in scheduled on-call rotations. Flock Freight is a Certified B Corp and describes its business as using AI-powered, patented pooling technology to combine shipments into Shared Truckloads, aiming to provide cost-efficient shipping and reduce the freight industry's carbon footprint. The role uses a hybrid work model with scheduled office and work-from-home days; Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday are in-office days. The company targets candidates in the San Diego/Encinitas and Los Angeles areas, and seeks candidates local to or willing to relocate to its San Diego headquarters.
Requirements
- 3–6 years of professional software engineering experience, preferably building and maintaining production web applications.
- Strong Java back-end development experience, including familiarity with frameworks such as Spring Boot.
- Proficiency in TypeScript, JavaScript, and React or similar front-end frameworks.
- Solid understanding of data modeling, relational databases, and SQL.
- Strong understanding of data structures, client/server architecture, and application scaling trade-offs.
- Experience with Git, modern IDEs, and build/deployment tools such as Gradle, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code.
- Experience supporting production systems, including debugging, root cause analysis, and performance optimization.
- Ability to break down complex technical problems and deliver high-quality solutions.
- Effective communication and experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to contribute to a collaborative team and provide guidance to peers when needed.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and maintain web applications using Java, React, and TypeScript.

- Own features after release, including production monitoring, debugging, and iterative improvements.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to develop features aligned with customer needs.
- Write clean, documented, maintainable, and efficient code using modern frameworks and practices.
- Debug and troubleshoot full-stack issues, provide production support, and perform root cause analysis.
- Contribute to and help evolve system architecture to improve scalability and maintainability.
- Use SQL and relational database tools to manage and persist application state.
- Recommend new development, refactoring, and third-party or open-source framework integrations.
- Participate in code reviews and support a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
- Participate in scheduled on-call rotations to support products in production.
