About The Position

The Azure Core New Tech team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to evolve the software platform that accepts new racks into Microsoft datacenters. The platform is used in factories and datacenters to verify that hardware is assembled, cabled, configured, and inventoried according to Microsoft’s business requirements, and to turn diagnostic results into clear actions. It supports adoption of new hardware across Azure, High-Performance Computing, and Office while maintaining quality and security. The role addresses the challenge of sustaining high-scale hardware bring-up through a software-driven acceptance process that can keep pace with cloud demand and changing hardware requirements. The platform models diverse device types and rack topologies, coordinates long-running and concurrent workflows, and produces actionable results even when validation failures are partial or unclear. The engineer will turn complex system and process challenges into software solutions, owning features from requirements discovery through implementation, testing, rollout, production monitoring, and refinement. Work is primarily in managed code such as C#, with platform capabilities and partner integrations validated through simulation and real hardware. This is a software product role rather than a low-level firmware development role. Datacenter hardware experience is valuable but not required; the team seeks strong architecture skills, systems thinking, and experience owning complex production workflows. The position offers end-to-end ownership and impact on new hardware platforms entering Microsoft’s cloud. The team supports a flexible working environment, including remote access to hardware when needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline and 4+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 8+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python; or a Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 6+ years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years owning substantial software scenarios through design, implementation, and rollout.
  • 3+ years driving platform improvements based on data, observations during on-call/DRI, and customer feedback.
  • 3+ years working across teams on integration, rollout plans, and alignment, including initiating changes that improved the final product.
  • 2+ years developing production software in a managed, object-oriented language such as C# or Java, including understanding of object-oriented design, composition, inheritance, interfaces, and component-based architecture.
  • 1+ year of experience with hardware validation automation, provisioning workflows, or networking concepts, including specific protocols and devices.
  • Experience diagnosing production issues using logs, metrics, traces, memory dumps, or other runtime evidence and delivering a lasting corrective change.
  • Datacenter hardware experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead features from proposal and architectural design through implementation, testing, rollout, production monitoring, and refinement.
  • Translate evolving hardware and operational requirements into clear workflows and rollout plans.
  • Improve the concurrency, reliability, maintainability, observability, and performance of long-running workflows.
  • Use operational data to identify systemic issues, reduce manual toil, improve diagnostic quality, and shorten end-to-end delivery time.
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, networking, firmware, driver, manufacturing, and datacenter teams to resolve system-level problems and define clear integration contracts.
  • Write clear technical documentation, guide engineering decisions, and mentor engineers through design and implementation tradeoffs.
  • Embody Microsoft’s culture and values.
