Senior Software Engineer

Altana•Brooklyn, NY

About The Position

Altana is building an AI-powered product network that helps governments and businesses create a more resilient and secure global economy while keeping trade flowing. The Engineering team develops a platform driven by AI, designed to scale across large datasets and a diverse customer base. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead a small team in building products that customers adopt. You will work closely with product and design, spend time observing customers in their workflows, identify customer needs, and turn evidence-based hypotheses into products. You will take new product surfaces from concept through launch and adoption, and own outcomes from initial customer conversations through product telemetry. You will use AI technologies—including LLMs, agents, evaluations, and retrieval—as core building blocks where appropriate. You will set technical standards, mentor engineers in customer-centered and hypothesis-driven development, and make practical technical decisions that enable rapid delivery and iteration. This role is based in Brooklyn, New York, with hybrid work flexibility; candidates must live within commuting distance of the Williamsburg office.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with product teams to decide what to build, develop hypotheses about customer value, design experiments, and learn from results.
  • Challenge product briefs that are not grounded in customer evidence.
  • Pitch, prototype, ship, and drive adoption of new product surfaces from 0 to 1.
  • Use AI-native technologies such as LLMs, agents, evaluations, retrieval, and modern AI tooling as appropriate product building blocks.
  • Own end-to-end product outcomes, from customer conversations to meaningful telemetry, including architecture and instrumentation decisions.
  • Set and uphold technical standards through design and code reviews focused on quality, simplicity, and customer impact.
  • Mentor engineers in customer-centered, hypothesis-driven product development and experimentation.
  • Make practical, iterative technical decisions that get working products in front of customers quickly and evolve them based on learning.
  • Lead other engineers on complex projects.
