About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer within Optum Technology, you will drive the design, development, and modernization of scalable enterprise applications supporting high-throughput healthcare and pharmacy benefit management (PBM) transaction systems. Working in an Agile environment, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to build cloud-native microservices, event-driven architectures, and secure RESTful APIs. You will use enterprise-approved AI platforms and modern development tools to improve engineering productivity, deliver high-quality solutions, and advance the cloud modernization roadmap. The position is telecommutable from anywhere within the U.S., subject to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy. The role covers the full software development lifecycle, including developing, testing, deploying, supporting, monitoring, and troubleshooting mission-critical applications. You will work with Java, Spring Boot, Docker, Kubernetes, public cloud platforms, relational databases, messaging systems, CI/CD pipelines, and observability tools. You will also develop AI-powered solutions with an emphasis on responsible use of AI, contribute to technical and architectural standards, collaborate with product owners and architects, and mentor junior engineers. The salary range is $91,700–$163,700 annually for full-time employment. Benefits and incentives are subject to eligibility requirements. Candidates must pass a drug test before beginning employment.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Technology, or at least 4 years of software development experience in lieu of a degree.
At least 6 years of hands-on software engineering experience developing enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices architectures.
At least 4 years of experience with event-driven architectures and messaging platforms such as Kafka or JMS.
At least 4 years of experience using enterprise monitoring and observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Splunk, or Grafana for application health and performance analysis.
At least 3 years of experience developing and deploying cloud-native applications on Azure, AWS, or GCP using Docker and Kubernetes.
At least 3 years of experience with relational database technologies, data modeling concepts, and Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
At least 2 years of experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Microsoft Copilot to improve coding productivity, test automation, and software delivery efficiency.
Adhere to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy if telecommuting.
Pass a drug test before beginning employment.

Nice To Haves

Experience in healthcare, pharmacy benefit management (PBM), claims processing, or real-time transaction processing systems.
Experience with healthcare integration standards such as NCPDP or HIPAA.
Experience building and supporting high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems using architectural resiliency patterns.
Experience implementing AI-assisted software development and automation practices across engineering teams.
Proven experience leading technical design discussions, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering best practices.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable microservices, cloud-native applications, and event-driven architectures using Java, Spring Boot, Docker, and Kubernetes throughout the software development lifecycle.
Implement secure RESTful APIs, relational database solutions, messaging systems such as Kafka or JMS, and CI/CD pipelines in accordance with architectural standards, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and DevSecOps practices.
Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions for complex business challenges, emphasizing responsible AI use.
Use enterprise-approved AI tools and technologies, such as GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Copilot, to streamline workflows, automate tasks, improve code quality, and increase engineering delivery efficiency.
Evaluate emerging technology and AI trends to inform solution design, architectural standards, and strategic system modernization.
Monitor application health, perform root cause analysis, and troubleshoot issues across environments using observability tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, and Grafana to support high availability.
Collaborate with product owners and architects in Agile/Scrum teams, mentor junior engineers, and promote engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
