Senior Software Engineer - Accounting & Ledger Systems

BitGoPalo Alto, CA
$200,000 - $220,000Onsite

About The Position

BitGo is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Accounting & Ledger Systems team. This role involves building and evolving the ledger systems that underpin client balances, trading positions, and financial reporting. The engineer will work at the intersection of software engineering and accounting, designing double-entry ledger primitives and ensuring financial correctness in new product designs. This is a unique opportunity for someone with a strong understanding of accounting fundamentals to apply their knowledge to complex distributed systems in a live financial platform.

Requirements

  • Real, working knowledge of accounting fundamentals: double-entry bookkeeping, chart-of-accounts design, financial statements (P&L, balance sheet), and practical understanding of reconciliation and audit requirements.
  • 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, with a proven ability to design data models for systems where correctness is paramount.
  • Strong understanding of extensible system design, including schemas and APIs that can adapt to new requirements.
  • Ability to read and critique technical designs across multiple systems.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills for collaboration with Finance, Data Engineering, and Product teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in crypto or blockchain infrastructure, such as on-chain balance models, custody, or wallet architecture.
  • Experience with event-driven or Kafka-based service architectures.
  • Prior experience in an embedded 'accounting architecture' or financial-systems design-review role at a fintech or crypto company.

Responsibilities

  • Design and extend core ledger components, including accounts, postings, and account-type/ledger structures.
  • Own the chart-of-accounts and reporting surface that links engineering data to financial statements and downstream reporting.
  • Work at the boundary between on-chain and off-chain data, focusing on balance verification, reconciliation, and proof-of-reserve mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams early in the design phase to ensure new features correctly model legal entity ownership, ledger placement, pricing, and reconciliation paths.
  • Design data models capable of accommodating new financial products (e.g., margin, lending, staking, tokenized assets) without requiring frequent, difficult migrations.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, bonus, and stock options
  • 100% company-paid health insurance for employee, partner, and dependents
  • Up to 4% 401k company match
  • Paid parental leave
  • Paid vacation
  • Free commuter/parking pass
  • Free custom lunches and snacks
  • Computer equipment and workplace furniture to suit your needs
  • Great colleagues and an inspiring environment
