About The Position

A1M Solutions is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Technology Delivery Practice. The role involves working with minimal guidance to design and implement complex, scalable systems, and collaborating with a team to turn ambiguous or complex goals into concrete, feasible steps that inform broader system strategy. Senior engineers may not have formal management or lead responsibilities, but an interest in teaching and coaching is essential. The engineer will build and maintain systems across application and infrastructure layers, own services through development, deployment, monitoring, and production support, and contribute to system design, architecture, APIs, data flows, testing, and DevOps practices. The role also includes mentoring and reviewing others’ work, collaborating across disciplines and with stakeholders, and proactively addressing government requirements and client needs. This is a fully remote, full-time, permanent position. Employees must work from the United States, have been US residents for at least three of the past five years, be permanent US residents, and have existing legal authorization to work in the US without ongoing visa sponsorship. Employees may not reside in New York state. New hires must complete a Public Trust background investigation. Because partners primarily work on Eastern Standard Time, employees outside that time zone need flexibility in their hours.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to write high-quality, tested, maintainable, and reusable code in production software systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in one or more modern programming languages, with professional experience in relevant technologies such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or Go.
  • Expertise in building secure, compliant software and minimizing vulnerability risks.
  • Expertise in an adjacent specialization such as data engineering, DevOps, cloud infrastructure, or application security, and ability to flex skills as needed.
  • Ability to work as a self-starter in ambiguous environments, independently identify high-impact work, and execute on it.
  • Proven ability to communicate technical results clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience working in government consulting engagements.
  • Must work from the United States and have been a US resident for 3 of the past 5 years.
  • Must be a permanent US resident and already have legal authorization to work in the US without ongoing visa sponsorship.
  • Must not reside in New York state.
  • Must complete a Public Trust background investigation, including the applicable SF85 or SF85P questionnaire and fingerprinting.
  • Must have flexibility in working hours if residing outside Eastern Standard Time, since partners primarily work on EST.
  • Must be able to participate actively in client virtual meetings, including being on camera, unless an accommodation applies.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or maintaining production applications using Django, PostgreSQL, or AWS services.
  • Experience working with a social impact-focused product team or in civic tech.
  • Experience working with distributed, cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, engineers, and subject matter experts.
  • Personal experience with government health and human services programs.
  • Working knowledge of Medicare, the ACA, MACRA, Medicaid, or CHIP.
  • Familiarity with SAFe and agile methodologies.
  • Experience integrating modern applications with existing systems, APIs, or legacy platforms.
  • Experience working on large-scale applications and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain complex, scalable systems across application and/or infrastructure layers and multiple components or services.
  • Own components or services from development through deployment, monitoring, and production support.
  • Deploy and manage systems in cloud environments, including AWS, using CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and infrastructure as code where appropriate.
  • Design, build, and integrate APIs and data flows, including work with relational databases and cloud-based data services.
  • Shape system design and contribute to architectural decisions, including writing decision documents and creating diagrams.
  • Improve code quality, automated testing, linting, and development standards using appropriate tools and practices.
  • Contribute to DevOps practices, including deployment, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Mentor engineers, review code and technical designs, and contribute to team growth and technical direction.
  • Break down ambiguous or complex goals into concrete, feasible steps.
  • Seek out and share technologies and skills that support project goals.
  • Participate in discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build connections between people, teams, projects, A1M, and clients to help prevent silos and improve delivery.
  • Get buy-in from relevant parties to ensure necessary work happens.
  • Recognize team and client risks or conflicts, identify approaches, take action, manage up, and escalate when appropriate.
  • Evaluate personal skills and deliverables and take action based on self-assessment, including seeking help to address skill gaps.
  • Initiate and drive projects involving people from multiple disciplines and practices.
  • Coach and mentor people across practices and disciplines, and proactively provide information needed by other practices.
  • Identify and respond to government requirements or policies that may affect project work, including accessibility, PRA, FOIA, acquisition regulations, and security compliance.
  • Anticipate the needs of government partners and users and represent the company and team to clients, including in challenging situations.
  • Participate actively in client virtual meetings, including being on camera, subject to reasonable accommodations where applicable.
