Senior Software Engineer

Parakeet Health•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

We are building a platform that handles all aspects of patient interaction and practice management, with the patient at the center of every touchpoint. Our agents leverage AI to manage tasks such as referrals, insurance checks, prescription refills, follow-ups, and billing. We are a fast-growing, VC-funded company working with over 400 medical practices. This role involves harnessing LLMs to increase engineering leverage, improve product quality, and reduce the time from idea to shipped product. Engineers will work closely with customers and have significant ownership in shaping the product. The role requires a blend of technical expertise, strong judgment, and a commitment to quality, especially given the sensitive nature of healthcare data. We are looking for engineers who are energized by rapid technological change and see LLMs as powerful tools for innovation.

Requirements

  • 3-7 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Expertise in Python, Django, and React.
  • Strong backend fundamentals: experience designing and implementing scalable, robust systems.
  • Genuine belief that agentic tools are the future of how software gets built.
  • Ability to treat LLMs as force multipliers and work in that manner.
  • Strong taste: ability to distinguish between technically correct code and a genuinely good patient experience.
  • Ability to identify and correct subtle issues before shipping.
  • Understanding that building software is both a science and an art.
  • A questioning mindset and a drive to find better ways of doing things.
  • Focus on shipping products that reach real people.
  • Honesty about knowledge gaps and willingness to admit when wrong.
  • Willingness to perform unglamorous work without complaint.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where problems may not be fully defined.
  • Experience taking real ownership of projects.
  • Agility and adaptability to a constantly evolving roadmap.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience at an early-stage startup is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Launch new end-to-end agent use cases for live customers within the first two weeks.
  • Make critical judgment calls regarding agent behavior in complex or sensitive patient interactions, such as error handling and handoffs to humans.
  • Harness LLMs to maximize personal leverage across all aspects of the job, including product gap identification, idea testing, and accelerating development cycles.
  • Collaborate closely with customers to understand their needs and inform product decisions.
  • Plan and build using an internal agent harness with custom skills.
  • Contribute to the development of agentic capabilities, such as autonomous bug fixing and automated information processing.
  • Build and expand the platform for handling tasks like processing faxes, managing referrals, and scheduling patient appointments.
  • Design and implement solutions for voice and conversation at scale, focusing on natural and human-like interactions.
  • Develop systems that determine appropriate communication at different stages of healthcare conversations and route edge cases to humans.
  • Build and maintain the infrastructure that supports reliable agent performance, including evaluation systems, context graphs, and safety guardrails.
  • Handle prescription refill requests and other manual, error-prone practice workflows.
  • Investigate and resolve issues surfaced by agent monitoring systems.
  • Implement requested features, such as a 'Mark as Reviewed' button for QA auditors, rapidly.
  • Collaborate with Customer Success (CSMs) and leadership to identify new product opportunities based on customer feedback.
  • Contribute to the team's culture of high EQ, collaboration, and genuine connection.
