About The Position
Bellwether Coffee is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their team in Berkeley, CA. This role involves working across a wide range of technologies, from cloud infrastructure and fleet management to on-device software and customer-facing applications. The ideal candidate will have end-to-end ownership experience, strong systems fundamentals, and a pragmatic approach to communication and problem-solving. The company utilizes AI-native engineering practices and values a blend of modern tooling with traditional engineering discipline.
Requirements
- End-to-end ownership: experience shipping and operating production systems, comfortable following problems across backend, device, or UI.
- Strong systems fundamentals: proficient in Go or TypeScript, with the ability to learn Swift, Kotlin, and embedded C.
- Comfortable with distributed systems, APIs, and relational/strongly-consistent databases.
- Experience using agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) as a core part of the workflow, with a clear point of view on their application and verification.
- Judgement about correctness: care about testing, schema discipline, and fleet stability.
- Pragmatic communicator: clear writing, sensible scoping, and good judgment with fuzzy requirements.
- Authorized to work in the U.S. without Visa Sponsorship.
Nice To Haves
- Embedded / IoT, OTA updates, or fleet-management experience
- GCP, Kubernetes, or Terraform in production
- gRPC/protobuf-based service design
- Experience with hardware-adjacent software, or a personal interest in coffee
Responsibilities
- Build fleet-management services and APIs in Go, backed by Spanner, exposed over gRPC/protobuf, deployed to GKE with Terraform-managed GCP infrastructure.
- Improve the on-device roaster application (TypeScript backend + frontend + simulator) and the Go firmware control daemon that talks to the hardware.
- Harden the over-the-air update pipeline and Raspberry Pi OS image builds.
- Build the green-coffee marketplace that connects customers to sourcing and fulfillment.
- Ship features across SvelteKit web, Swift (iOS), and Kotlin (Android) apps.
- Diagnose production fleet behavior using the BigQuery data lake.
