Senior Software Engineer

Oaktree Capital Management, L.P.•Los Angeles, CA
•$190,000 - $225,000

About The Position

Oaktree is seeking a senior individual contributor for its newly formed Product Engineering group to build the next-generation platform for its credit business. Although the internal title is Vice President, the role is comparable in scope to a Senior or Staff Engineer at a technology company. It is a hands-on position requiring daily coding, system building, problem solving, and software delivery—not primarily work directing others. The engineer will build data-intensive applications across the platform, including data pipelines and integration layers, analytics, APIs, and user-facing tools used by investment professionals. The platform is intended to help Oaktree's credit business scale beyond $200 billion in AUM. The role works directly with business stakeholders and leadership to understand goals and workflows, define and prioritize engineering work, and own delivery in an environment without traditional product managers. Oaktree is modernizing its architecture and technology stack in the cloud, guided by an established vision that favors proven patterns, reliable technologies, and durable systems over novelty. The environment is Azure-based, though experience operating at scale on any major cloud platform is relevant. The team also applies grounded generative AI in engineering and product workflows, with attention to validation, transparency, and responsible use. The position includes technical influence over the platform and its components, mentoring and elevating other engineers, and applying modern development and release practices. The required education is a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. An advanced degree (MS, MBA) or equivalent experience in product-focused engineering leadership is preferred. Oaktree describes its culture as collaborative, curious, inclusive, and respectful of diversity of thought, with training, career development, and community philanthropy as important elements. The base salary range is $190,000–$225,000. The position also offers discretionary bonus incentives, a comprehensive benefits package, and a flexible work arrangement. Salary offered depends on experience, qualifications, industry knowledge and expertise, training, and education.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of software engineering experience, including building and owning production data-intensive systems; willingness to continue writing code daily.
  • Track record as a senior individual contributor or staff/principal engineer in a complex domain such as financial services, infrastructure, or data platforms.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, distributed systems, and performance.
  • Deep expertise designing systems that process, transform, and serve large volumes of data, including data modeling, pipeline architecture, storage trade-offs, and query performance.
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one statically typed, compiled language, such as C#/.NET, C++, Java, Scala, or Go.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and cloud-native patterns including microservices, event-driven architectures, containerization, and infrastructure as code.
  • Ability to work without a traditional product-manager structure, engage directly with stakeholders, navigate ambiguity, prioritize independently, and own outcomes from problem definition through delivery.
  • Strong product instinct and demonstrated ability to connect technical execution with user needs and business outcomes.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and influence without authority.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to whiteboard with engineers and discuss priorities with business leaders.
  • Outstanding organization and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding initiative and a strong work ethic.
  • Responsibility and a strong sense of dedication.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and time constraints.
  • Flexibility, a team-oriented approach, integrity, and professionalism.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS, MBA) or equivalent experience in product-focused engineering leadership.
  • Experience with Azure; the posting notes that the environment is Azure-based, while experience at scale on another major cloud platform is also relevant.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own critical credit-platform components end-to-end, from data pipelines and services to user-facing applications.
  • Design and implement performant, reliable, evolvable data-intensive applications, including ingestion pipelines, transformation layers, analytical engines, and APIs.
  • Contribute to modernization of Oaktree's technology stack and help shape platform evolution within the established architectural vision.
  • Work directly with business stakeholders and investment professionals to understand goals, workflows, and pain points, and translate them into well-scoped, high-value engineering work.
  • Act as the de facto product owner for areas of the platform by prioritizing work, defining MVPs, running experiments, iterating, and making trade-offs based on user value and business impact.
  • Apply grounded generative AI to improve development velocity and code quality, augment analytics, and build AI-powered user features, while emphasizing validation, transparency, and responsible use.
  • Mentor and elevate engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and high standards for craft and ownership.
  • Implement CI/CD, feature flags, automated testing, and observability.
  • Champion data-driven experimentation and continuous feedback, using telemetry and analytics to inform product and engineering decisions.
  • Communicate engineering trade-offs clearly to technical and business audiences and frame decisions in terms of outcomes.

Benefits

  • Discretionary bonus incentives.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Flexible work arrangement.
  • Training and career development opportunities.
