About The Position

GRAIL is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Commercial engineering team within its Technology organization. The team builds and operates patient- and provider-facing software behind the Galleri® test, including my.grail.com and provider.grail.com, as well as systems that collect and deliver clinical data. The role is backend-leaning full-stack, with ownership of cloud-native services built in Go on AWS and Kubernetes, alongside React interfaces used by patients and clinicians. The engineer owns systems throughout design, implementation, testing, rollout, and production operation, while helping raise the engineering bar across the team. The position is based in Sunnyvale, California, with a flexible work arrangement allowing work from the office or home. Current policy requires at least 60% (24 hours) of the total work week onsite. The specific schedule is determined with the manager and may exceed that minimum based on team and business needs. Tuesdays and Thursdays are key days for onsite presence at the Sunnyvale campus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a similar technical field with 5+ years of related experience; or a Master's degree with 2+ years of related experience; or a PhD; or equivalent experience.
  • Professional experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production backend or full-stack applications.
  • Professional experience building and operating services on a major cloud platform such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Proficiency in at least one backend programming language such as Go, Java, Python, or C++.
  • Strong professional written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience writing production Go and experience with gRPC-based service communication.
  • Experience building and maintaining production React applications.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, including infrastructure as code using Terraform.
  • Experience operating containerized workloads with Kubernetes and Docker in production.
  • Experience designing and scaling microservice architectures, including service boundaries, versioning, and backward compatibility.
  • Strong working knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, including schema design and query performance, and caching layers such as Redis.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies, and agile development practices.
  • Experience building software in healthcare or another regulated domain, including familiarity with HIPAA, PHI handling, or software quality and validation requirements.
  • Experience with observability and reliability tooling, and a track record of improving system uptime.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading small project teams.
  • A demonstrated passion for designing and building practical, high-quality software, and a desire to add value to the team.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate backend services and distributed systems that power GRAIL's commercial offerings for the Galleri® test, including my.grail.com and provider.grail.com.
  • Own features and services end to end, from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Build and maintain React interfaces used by patients, clinicians, and internal clinical operations teams.
  • Lead technical design for projects of diverse scope, working independently and bringing designs forward for review at critical decision points.
  • Devise solutions where precedent is limited, adapting existing approaches and exercising judgment to select a course of action.
  • Partner with product managers, clinical operations, and other engineering teams to translate ambiguous requirements into clear technical plans.
  • Advise senior stakeholders and adapt communication to the audience.
  • Write and maintain automated tests and test protocols appropriate for software operating in a regulated healthcare environment.
  • Improve reliability and observability of owned systems, participate in on-call rotation and incident response, and complete follow-up remediation.
  • Raise engineering quality through code review, pairing, and mentorship of less experienced engineers.
  • Identify and drive improvements to tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and development practices.
