About The Position

The Servo Software team within System Software develops the real-time software infrastructure supporting performance, safety, observability, and user-facing features of Intuitive’s da Vinci Surgical System. The team works across system software architecture, feature development, observability, and product safety and reliability, with software spanning middleware and frameworks for observability, motion control algorithms, state machines, audio intercom and system sounds, data streaming and logging, and platform support for the next-generation da Vinci Simulator product line. The Senior Software Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop robotics system software and applications for introspection, observability, and event-timeline visualization. The role includes architecting and developing applications and pipelines that interpret system status—including events, logs, and data streams—and help analyze complex multimodal robotics system issues. The position also contributes to new architectural enhancements, product development, system failure analysis, and bringing observability applications from prototype to launch.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, 6 years with a master’s degree, or 3 years with a Ph.D.; equivalent experience is also accepted.
  • Proficiency in C/C++.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Familiarity with building embedded software, distributed systems, and/or applications that use observability data such as logs, events, and data streams from robotics or embedded devices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with robotics and system software for complex distributed systems.
  • Comfort with design inputs and outputs, traceability, and risk analysis.
  • Experience across product development lifecycle phases, including design, implementation, debugging, verification, validation, and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Experience or familiarity working with data platform teams and developing data pipelines for embedded-device data.
  • Familiarity with robotics-system observability, processing, visualization, and automatic issue detection applications, including Python analysis in the cloud using system events, logs, and data with known signatures or machine-learning techniques.
  • Experience with data visualization and knowledge of full-stack software development.
  • Familiarity with deployment infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop robust, efficient, product-focused robotics system software in C/C++ and observability applications, pipelines, and analytics for understanding system status, constructing event timelines, and analyzing complex robotics system issues.
  • Design and develop Python applications to analyze system status using logs, events, and data streams, either through local system interfaces or backend services.
  • Identify and validate architectural enhancements to software infrastructure and development processes that benefit the broader organization.
  • Design and develop robotic system software and tools for system introspection, observability, and event-timeline visualization.
  • Analyze real-time processing performance and extend processing frameworks for next-generation products.
  • Bring up research prototypes used to evaluate new product concepts.
  • Design and develop hardware and software diagnostic tools.
  • Perform unit testing and code integration to support system reliability and robustness.
  • Contribute to system failure analysis, identify issues and risks, and discuss mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with embedded software, user-interface software, data pipeline and analytics, field-service applications, system test, and reliability engineering teams to bring observability applications from prototype to launch.
  • Document software designs according to Intuitive’s development and quality guidelines.

Benefits

  • Market-competitive compensation package including base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity.
