About The Position

AIM is hiring a Senior Software Engineer with a UI focus to build the web interfaces that connect people with its autonomous heavy-equipment fleets. The role owns two web surfaces: a safety-critical Operator UI and a multi-tenant administration portal, along with the shared design system that powers both. The work spans accessible component-library architecture, live 3D scenes and telemetry, teleoperation controls and video streaming, authorization and internationalization, and reliable production software for use in demanding field environments. The engineer will work across software, autonomy, controls, hardware, design, technical program management, and field operations. The role emphasizes ownership of operator and customer outcomes, accessibility, performance, safety, reliability, observability, and developer experience. It also includes technical leadership through reviews, mentoring, architectural discussions, and improvements to engineering practices and tools. The position is based in Seattle and includes travel opportunities to customer jobsites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Design, HCI, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience delivering production frontend systems.
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript and React, including modern patterns such as hooks, suspense, and concurrent rendering.
  • Experience with 3D web graphics, such as Three.js, React Three Fiber, Drei, WebGL, shaders, GLTF pipelines, BVH acceleration, or point-cloud rendering.
  • Experience with real-time data and binary serialization, such as Protocol Buffers, gRPC-web, WebSockets, or high-frequency web telemetry.
  • Experience with modern frontend tooling, such as Vite, npm workspaces or pnpm/yarn workspaces, Storybook, and modern testing stacks.
  • Strong debugging skills using browser developer tools, logs, telemetry, metrics, and tracing.
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality software independently and as part of cross-functional teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Comfort working across the whole stack when needed.
  • Experience with safety-critical or industrial UI in fields such as robotics, automotive, aerospace, medical, defense, or energy.
  • Experience using state machines or statecharts, such as XState, for safe UI flows.
  • Experience with TanStack Router, TanStack Query, Zustand, Tailwind CSS v4, tailwind-variants, Floating UI, Mantine, or Visx.
  • Experience with multi-tenant SaaS authorization (ReBAC/ABAC) and UI patterns for making complex permissions comprehensible.
  • Experience with frontend infrastructure such as Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, micro-frontend architecture, OpenTelemetry, or Sentry.
  • Ability to write exceptionally clean code and design simple, maintainable component APIs.
  • Ability to connect frontend decisions to real-world operator and customer outcomes.
  • A strong safety, accessibility, and reliability mindset.
  • Ability to turn ambiguity into well-structured, well-architected solutions.
  • Ability to elevate engineering rigor through mentorship, documentation, and clear communication.
  • Confidence across design systems, real-time data, 3D rendering, and multi-tenant SaaS.

Responsibilities

  • Set architectural direction for the shared design system, including component APIs, accessibility, theming, versioning, deprecation paths, and migration tooling.
  • Improve the developer experience and establish patterns that help engineers build high-quality, accessible interfaces.
  • Architect and implement the Operator UI’s live 3D scene using technologies such as Three.js, React Three Fiber, and Drei, including point clouds, terrain meshes, geofence editing, cut/fill visualization, and machine overlays.
  • Design state machines, validation, and observability for safety-critical UI flows.
  • Build teleoperation controls and integrate live video streaming.
  • Drive architecture for the multi-tenant administration portal, including authorization, internationalization (including RTL), and real-time data.
  • Deliver clean, testable, maintainable TypeScript and production-ready frontend software.
  • Improve code quality, accessibility, performance, reliability, and observability.
  • Lead code reviews, design reviews, and architectural discussions.
  • Work with TPMs, design, autonomy, controls, hardware, and field operations to ensure the UI works reliably on real machines and customer sites.
  • Partner with FDEs to understand field conditions and incorporate operational realities into the codebase.
  • Drive root-cause analysis and eliminate recurring defects.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Improve developer experience, CI/CD, testing frameworks, and local development tooling.
  • Help define software engineering excellence and engineering mechanisms across the organization.
