About The Position

BuildOps is building software for commercial contractors, supporting the service and project workflows that keep buildings, businesses, and critical infrastructure operating. The Senior Software Engineer will build and scale product experiences and systems across frontend applications, backend services, APIs, and integrations. The role partners closely with Engineering, Product, and Design to solve complex problems, improve reliability and usability, and deliver customer and business impact. The engineer will own meaningful technical problems end to end, make sound decisions amid ambiguity, contribute to engineering quality, mentor teammates, and use AI tools as a practical aid in development. The position involves designing, implementing, rolling out, monitoring, and maintaining software in a fast-moving environment. The role follows a hybrid schedule: work from home Monday and Friday, and collaborate in the office Tuesday through Thursday. Compensation is $148,000–$197,000 base salary, plus an annual bonus and stock options.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building product features across frontend and backend systems.
  • Experience building reliable APIs, services, and user-facing applications in a modern production environment.
  • Strong software design instincts, including decomposing complex business problems into maintainable technical solutions.
  • Solid understanding of databases, data modeling, and relational database tradeoffs.
  • Experience with modern web application patterns and polished customer-facing product experiences.
  • Experience owning projects with ambiguity and making technical decisions with incomplete information.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and align stakeholders beyond the immediate team.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including root-cause analysis and simplifying systems.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, particularly in design documents, technical tradeoff discussions, and stakeholder updates.
  • Track record of mentoring teammates and raising engineering quality.
  • Ownership, urgency, and accountability for shipping and operating software successfully.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced startup where priorities evolve and sound judgment matters.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve throughput, learning speed, and quality.
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field from a top university.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule, working from home Monday and Friday and in the office Tuesday through Thursday.

  • Experience with React or similar frontend frameworks.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, Docker, or infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Familiarity with Kafka, Redis, Elasticsearch, or other event-driven and high-throughput systems.
  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms.
  • Experience building integrations, internal platform capabilities, or data pipelines.
  • Experience in SaaS, vertical software, or systems supporting operational workflows.
  • Experience using Claude Code or similar AI coding agents in day-to-day development.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain product features and systems across frontend and backend applications.
  • Own projects through technical design, implementation, rollout, monitoring, and long-term maintenance.
  • Work with product managers, designers, and engineers to turn ambiguous problems into technical plans and scoped milestones.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code emphasizing simplicity, reliability, and extensibility.
  • Build user-facing experiences and supporting APIs across client, service, and data boundaries.
  • Design for observability and reliability using metrics, dashboards, alerting, and health checks.
  • Improve the performance, scalability, and resilience of owned products and systems.
  • Identify technical risks, cross-team dependencies, and sources of toil proactively.
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical discussions, and architecture decisions.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers through code review, technical guidance, and example-setting.
  • Share knowledge, improve engineering standards, and contribute to a collaborative, high-accountability culture.
  • Use AI tools thoughtfully for development, debugging, documentation, and workflow acceleration while applying sound engineering judgment.
