Senior Software Engineer
About The Position
As a Senior Software Engineer on Appian’s platform team, you will develop and evolve an AI-powered process automation platform used for complex, mission-critical enterprise workflows. The role spans the platform’s high-performance data layer, cross-platform user interface, and application-design tools. You will address challenges in distributed systems, performance optimization, scalability, and enterprise resilience, with architectural decisions and code affecting large organizations running critical operations on the platform. You will build resilient platform features, APIs, and shared frameworks; optimize performance and throughput; and ensure platform stability, modularity, and long-term scalability. You will collaborate with product and engineering teams to turn customer needs into technical solutions, uphold engineering standards through code reviews and best practices, and provide technical leadership and mentorship. The role is on-site in McLean, Virginia.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- At least 6 years of professional software development experience building enterprise-scale applications.
- Expert-level proficiency in Java programming and object-oriented design principles.
- Deep understanding of data structures and algorithms, and their practical application to complex performance challenges.
- Proven experience designing and implementing REST APIs for enterprise integrations.
- Strong foundation in software design patterns and architectural principles for scalable systems.
- Experience with CI/CD in cloud environments such as AWS and continuous integration systems such as Jenkins.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with AWS cloud services and distributed cloud-native architectures.
- Background building high-throughput, low-latency systems serving large user bases.
- Familiarity with relational and NoSQL database optimization techniques.
Responsibilities
- Architect and construct high-performance, resilient platform features, robust APIs, and shared frameworks for mission-critical operations.
- Use knowledge of data structures and algorithms to optimize platform performance, reduce latency, and improve throughput.
- Design and implement REST APIs for integrations across complex enterprise ecosystems, with reliability and performance under high-volume production loads.
- Execute technical spikes to establish architectural runways and support system stability, modularity, and long-term scalability.
- Partner with product and engineering teams to translate customer requirements into technical solutions that balance flexibility and performance.
- Conduct code reviews and establish engineering best practices to improve code quality and system reliability.
- Investigate performance bottlenecks and scalability challenges, and implement solutions to support future platform growth.
- Lead proactive refactoring and performance optimization, including low-latency improvements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers.
- Use AI tools to enhance productivity and efficiency.
