About The Position

Uplight is creating a new category of energy by developing software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses. This software, which includes smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and behavioral adjustments, aims to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, thereby increasing its efficiency and reliability. This process generates clean energy capacity that can be utilized by the power grid, reducing the need for fossil fuels. Uplight's solutions are designed to accelerate the transition to clean energy and reduce costs for energy consumers. The company is seeking a Senior Software Engineer – Virtual Power Plant (VPP) to advance its technology and lead in the clean energy sector. The VPP platform offered by Uplight utilizes AI-powered monitoring, forecasting, and dispatch tools to aggregate and orchestrate Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) across various asset classes, customer segments, and device types. This role will enable grid operators to leverage flexible, dispatchable capacity at scale for critical grid services. As a senior member of the team, the engineer will foster a culture of "full service ownership," managing features from initial design and development through deployment, infrastructure management, and operational health.

Requirements

BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a strictly related field.
5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of delivering scalable, production-grade systems.
Strong proficiency in Python (or similar object-oriented programming languages), with a focus on writing readable, testable, and maintainable code and a deep understanding of design patterns.
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS), building CI/CD pipelines, and utilizing Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
Solid working knowledge of various SQL and NoSQL databases.
Extensive experience operating within Agile/Lean development environments with a strong commitment to full service ownership and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain scalable backend services and robust APIs for Uplight’s VPP platform, ensuring seamless data access for internal users and external customers.
Champion full service ownership by designing, deploying, and managing cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices.
Build, optimize, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for rapid, secure, and reliable code delivery to production.
Design cost-effective, scalable data models for relational and NoSQL databases to handle large-scale data storage and retrieval.
Implement automated systems for monitoring data quality to ensure accuracy and availability for dependent business processes.
Ensure system reliability through rigorous testing, proactive monitoring, performance benchmarking, and debugging of production issues.
Drive architectural design, implement best software engineering practices, and manage technical risks for predictable project delivery.
Introduce agentic AI into daily workflows by evaluating and piloting AI coding agents and assistants for development, code review, testing, and operational runbooks.
Establish patterns, guardrails, and best practices for responsible and effective use of agentic AI, collaborating with other engineering teams.
Collaborate with Product Management, Delivery, and Operations to translate customer needs into new capabilities.
Mentor peers through constructive code reviews and technical guidance.
