Senior Software Engineer

Intuitive•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

The Servo Software team within System Software develops real-time software infrastructure supporting performance, safety, observability, and user-facing features of Intuitive’s da Vinci Surgical System. Its work includes system software infrastructure, middleware and frameworks for observability, motion control algorithms, state machines, audio intercom and system sounds, data streaming and logging, and platform support for the next-generation da Vinci Simulator product line. The Senior Software Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop robotics system software and applications for system introspection, observability, and event-timeline visualization. The role includes architecting and building applications and pipelines to understand system status through events, logs, and data streams, construct system event timelines, and analyze complex multimodal robotics issues. The position also contributes to software architecture and development processes, system reliability, failure analysis, and taking observability applications from prototype to launch.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, 6 years with a master’s degree, 3 years with a PhD, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in C/C++.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Familiarity with building embedded software, distributed systems, or applications that operate on observability data such as logs, events, and data streams from robotics or embedded devices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robotics and system software for complex distributed systems.
  • Comfort with design input, design output, traceability, and risk analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort across the product development lifecycle, including design, implementation, debugging, verification, validation, and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Experience or familiarity working with data platform teams and developing data pipelines for embedded-device data.
  • Familiarity with robotics system observability, processing, visualization, and automatic issue detection applications, including Python-based cloud analysis of system events, logs, and data using known signatures or machine-learning techniques.
  • Experience with data visualization and knowledge of full-stack software development.
  • Familiarity with deployment infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop robust, efficient, product-focused robotics system software in C/C++ and observability software, pipelines, and analytics.
  • Develop Python applications to analyze system status using logs, events, and data streams, locally or through backend systems.
  • Identify and validate architectural improvements to software infrastructure and development processes.
  • Develop robotic system software and system introspection, observability, and event-timeline visualization capabilities.
  • Analyze real-time processing performance and extend processing frameworks for future product generations.
  • Bring up research prototypes used to evaluate new product concepts.
  • Design and develop hardware and software diagnostic tools.
  • Contribute to unit testing and code integration to support system reliability and robustness.
  • Conduct system failure analysis, identify issues and risks, and discuss mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with embedded software, user interface, data pipeline and analytics, field service applications, system test, and reliability teams to bring observability applications from prototype to launch.
  • Document software designs in accordance with Intuitive development and quality guidelines.
