Senior Software Engineer - Test Infrastructure

IonQ•College Park, MD

About The Position

IonQ is seeking a Software Engineer - Test Infrastructure to join its Release Engineering team. The role owns quality signals for integrated software running IonQ quantum computers by designing and operating automated tests that validate complete systems, including customer-scale circuit execution and tools for operating and calibrating machines. Tests run on shared test environments that are themselves quantum computing systems. The engineer will build and maintain CI infrastructure to catch integration problems early, define system-level test strategy, and manage the test system fleet. The position works closely with software, hardware, and physics teams and is suited to a curious, collaborative engineer interested in hardware-software integration testing and in defining effective testing for novel systems. The role is based out of IonQ’s College Park, Maryland; Boulder, Colorado; or Bothell, Washington offices, with a hybrid model that allows remote work a few days per week. Travel may be up to 10% domestically or internationally.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in test infrastructure, software test automation, CI engineering, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or another general-purpose language, including experience creating test frameworks and automation tooling.
  • Hands-on experience designing, operating, and scaling CI/CD systems used by engineering teams.
  • Experience implementing system-level integration tests for complex, multi-component systems.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop or lab-based test environments, or demonstrated aptitude for working close to physical hardware.
  • Excellent debugging skills, particularly across the software-hardware boundary.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work closely with engineers across multiple product teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with performance testing methodology and workload characterization.
  • Experience instrumenting and validating electronic control systems, such as capturing and asserting signal output using an oscilloscope or equivalent instrumentation.
  • Experience managing test health at scale, including flaky-test management, test observability, or quality metrics and dashboards.
  • Familiarity with containerization and infrastructure-as-code for building reproducible test environments.
  • Background in scientific or research computing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end integration testing of system software by designing, developing, and maintaining automated test suites for complete quantum computing systems on shared test environments, including realistic customer workloads.
  • Expand automated test coverage of operator-facing tools and workflows used by engineers and physicists to operate and calibrate systems.
  • Design, build, and operate reliable, fast CI infrastructure that catches integration bugs before software is deployed onto systems, partnering with software development teams.
  • Define and evolve system-level test strategy, identify coverage gaps beyond functional job execution, and develop tests and instrumentation to address them, including performance characterization and electronics-control validation where appropriate.
  • Lead integration-test triage and reporting by driving failures to root cause, attributing regressions to components, and giving owning teams specific, actionable feedback.
  • Manage the test-system fleet lifecycle across product lines, including consistent hardware and software baselines, upgrades and decommissioning coordinated with product teams, and authoritative records of system configuration and fitness for purpose.
  • Champion testability across component teams by promoting interfaces, test hooks, and practices that make system software easier to validate.
