About The Position

The News Product Foundations team at the New York Times builds and maintains a flexible system of editorial, technical and data infrastructure tools to help surface the best of our journalism to readers. You'll support the programming of 1:1 personalization experiments and variants for our machine learning powered systems on the homepage, story pages, and our mobile apps. You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager within the Reader experience Technology Team

Requirements

3+ years of experience in programming languages that are backend focused (Node / Typescript, Go, Java, Python)
3+ years of experience with cloud-based deployments on Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform
2+ years of experience with data engineering in production applications (Apache Beam / Airflow, GCP Dataflow / Composer).
2+ years of experience with terraform to manage production infrastructure at scale.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Kubernetes
Experience with Kafka
Experience with federated GraphQL architecture

Responsibilities

Lead the development and optimization of data and technical infrastructure that connects our machine learning platform to editorial tools and surfaces.
Draw on your experience with Kubernetes and Kafka to build real-time systems that reflect the rapid pace of our newsroom.
Maintain our Personalization subgraph in a federated GraphQL architecture.
Contribute to other back-end systems that improve the quality of our product and the discoverability of our content
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
