About The Position

Tutor is an AI robotics company that designs, builds, manufactures, deploys, maintains, and teaches its robots. This role focuses on the internal software systems that support these functions, including robot tracking, service history, manufacturing, deployment, and sales. The company builds its own tools, including a custom PLM and MES. This position is for a senior engineer who enjoys operations and will work closely with manufacturing, deployment, and field maintenance teams. A significant part of the role involves working with AI coding agents to build and maintain internal software, requiring critical review of their output and effective design of interfaces and data. All R&D roles hold the title Member of Technical Staff (MoTS), with the level determined during the interview process. Requirements

6+ years of experience building production software, including ownership of internal or operational systems.
Proficiency in data modeling, including designing and evolving relational schemas and managing migrations.
Full-stack development experience with TypeScript and React on the front end, and Python or TypeScript services on the back end.
Comfort working with operational staff (technicians, plant managers) to understand their needs and build fitting software.
Experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code) for engineering tasks, including directing multi-step tasks and understanding their limitations.
Judgment in deciding whether to build or buy software solutions, and identifying when software is needed for a process.

Nice To Haves

Experience with manufacturing or field-service systems (MES, ERP, work orders, serialized inventory, maintenance management).
Experience in robotics or hardware companies, particularly with tracking physical assets.
Familiarity with data warehousing and analytics tools (dbt, ClickHouse, Metabase, or similar).
Experience with gRPC and Protocol Buffers.
Prior experience as the first or only internal tools engineer at a growing company.

Responsibilities

Own the shared data model: Define and manage the definitions of robots, sites, customers, parts, jobs, and people, ensuring it remains the single source of truth as new functions are added.
Own the internal systems for operations functions: Develop and maintain systems for maintenance tickets, service history, manufacturing work orders, serialized builds, tutoring and teleoperation queues, deployment records, and sales handoffs.
Translate operational processes into software: Understand workflows by working with operational staff and build systems to support them.
Ensure data trustworthiness: Reconcile disparate systems, replace spreadsheets, and build reporting for decision-making.
Build with AI agents: Direct AI coding agents on a large internal codebase, maintain the codebase for agent compatibility, and critically review agent-generated code.
Support users of internal systems: Provide timely assistance for operational issues and address underlying process problems when necessary.
