Senior Software Engineer, Commerce Platform

ZiplineSouth San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Zipline is the world's largest and most experienced drone delivery service, dedicated to providing access to food, medicine, and essential goods globally. They design, build, and operate an autonomous logistics system, completing millions of deliveries across four continents. Zipline partners with healthcare systems, governments, retailers, restaurants, and global businesses to enhance supply chains, reduce congestion, and save lives. The company focuses on practical problem solvers who thrive on real-world challenges and rapid growth, building systems with a direct impact on people's lives. The Commerce Platform team is responsible for building the commercial engine that powers Zipline's network. This platform is designed to scale across various metros, countries, and verticals (restaurants, retail, healthcare), handling millions of orders daily.

Requirements

  • A track record of building and shipping production software across the full stack, from consumer-facing interfaces to backend services and data pipelines
  • Ability to hold both product instinct and systems judgment at the same time, caring about user experience and reliable architecture at scale
  • Understanding of marketplace dynamics: ordering flows, pricing logic, financial correctness, and the tradeoffs between them
  • Ability to simplify complexity, define durable abstractions, and improve the architecture
  • Thrive working across product boundaries (e.g., consumer, partner, internal tooling, and financial systems) without losing coherence
  • Desire to shape architecture and product direction, not just implement scoped features
  • Ability to learn new tools quickly and focus on solving the right problems (current stack includes Go, Python, React, gRPC, Kafka, PostgreSQL, AWS, Bazel, Grafana, and Honeycomb)
  • Excitement to work with engineers who use modern AI tooling to amplify productivity while maintaining high standards for system design and code quality

Responsibilities

  • Own software across the full commercial stack, including Merchant Portal, Partner integrations, Marketplace Platform, Billing Engine, Fulfillment apps, Customer support tooling, and Serviceability & coverage tools
  • Give merchant partners real-time operational visibility, self-serve onboarding, and financial clarity without fragmenting the system across verticals
  • Design marketplace policy controls that allow operators to safely change pricing, capacity allocation, and prioritization, with experimentation before production
  • Build a billing engine that traces every dollar from customer charge through partner payout across promotions, refunds, revenue shares, and multi-jurisdiction tax
  • Build AI-powered customer support that can take action, issuing refunds, applying credits, and explaining delays using live mission data
  • Keep unit economics visible and margin protected as volume scales across partners, verticals, and geographies
  • Identify important problems and form a clear view of how the system should work
  • Drive solutions from concept through production
  • Use AI tooling effectively as a force multiplier across exploration, implementation, and debugging, while maintaining strong engineering rigor, judgment, and accountability
