Senior Software Engineer, Agentic Systems
About The Position
StackHawk is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Agentic Systems team. This role focuses on building the security layer for AI-assisted engineering, specifically developing tools that find exploitable vulnerabilities in running applications and APIs, and integrating them with coding agents in developer editors. The engineer will be responsible for owning the 'find, fix, verify' loop, working on agentic systems, tool surfaces, context engineering, and evaluation harnesses. The role also involves contributing to the core platform, including the scan engine and APIs. This is a hands-on product role with direct customer impact, offering the opportunity to shape architectural decisions in an early-stage product within a stable company. The position is based onsite in Denver, emphasizing the importance of in-person collaboration for design discussions and problem-solving.
Requirements
- 6+ years building and shipping production SaaS software.
- Deep experience in at least one statically typed language (Python, TypeScript, Go, or Rust experience is beneficial for agent tooling and CLI).
- Experience with microservices in a modern cloud environment, containers, and container orchestration.
- Solid API design instincts and experience with related tooling.
- Obsession with automation and automated testing.
- Experience building something with an agent loop (tool calling, multi-step execution, retries, failure handling, knowing when to stop).
- Experience writing evals for non-deterministic output, including discussing metrics and their limitations.
- Experience with real context engineering, understanding that most agent failures are context failures.
- Curiosity about how software breaks and discipline to care about correctness.
- Accountability: owning outcomes, not just tickets.
- Persuasiveness: bringing people to your position with logic and data.
- Self-motivation: not needing to be told what matters twice.
- Focus: finishing things before starting new things.
- Collaboration: understanding security as a supporting function and the difference between binary security and security at scale.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Kotlin and Java (core platform languages).
- Application security (AppSec) depth.
- Experience building or publishing MCP servers, agent skills, or custom agent integrations.
Responsibilities
- Design and build the find, fix, and verify loop that powers our agentic security workflows.
- Build and own the tool layer coding agents use to reach our platform, including rewriting existing components.
- Extend published agent skills, which are open source and in use today.
- Perform context engineering to improve agent usefulness by defining what the model sees, in what shape, and at what point in the loop.
- Build eval harnesses for non-deterministic systems, defining and measuring improvements.
- Build core product features and supporting services in a microservices architecture.
- Design and build APIs for both our UI and our customers.
- Build developer-facing command line tooling.
- Integrate with platforms engineers use, such as GitHub, GitLab, CI systems, IDEs, and agent runtimes.
- Work directly with product, security, and go-to-market teams, incorporating customer feedback.
- Learn about vulnerability classes and how to explain them.
