About The Position

Travelport is hiring a Senior Software Development Engineer to join a team building AI-centered, cloud-native systems for flight search, pricing, and trip-planning services. The role involves designing, developing, and operating scalable distributed systems, large-scale data pipelines, and AI-facing platforms that make travel data and services accessible to applications and intelligent agents. It combines backend, data, and platform engineering with operational ownership. The engineer will build and maintain backend services and data pipelines, develop data models and storage patterns for an analytical data lake, and create platforms that expose data, tools, and services to AI-driven applications. The role also includes operating workloads on a Kubernetes-based cloud platform, maintaining CI/CD processes, contributing to production observability and automated testing, and collaborating across engineering, platform, and data science teams. The engineer will participate in technical design, code reviews, architecture decisions, and agile planning, while driving improvements in reliability, scalability, performance, and cost efficiency.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in professional software development, including designing, building, and operating production-grade backend systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Java, Scala, and/or Python, and ability to work across multiple languages, frameworks, and runtime environments.
  • Experience building and operating distributed data processing solutions using technologies such as Apache Spark and Kafka.
  • Experience with cloud-native infrastructure and container orchestration platforms, including Kubernetes, Helm, and AWS.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code practices and tools such as Terraform and Terragrunt.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD principles, automated testing, and software delivery best practices.
  • Understanding of observability practices, including monitoring, logging, metrics, and alerting for production systems.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills, with experience in agile, code review-driven engineering environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with modern data lake and lakehouse technologies, such as Apache Iceberg, Nessie, or similar catalog systems.
  • Experience managing schema evolution and data governance within analytical data platforms.
  • Experience building or integrating AI-facing interfaces and agentic AI solutions, such as MCP, RAG, Spring AI, LangChain, LangGraph, or LLM function calling.
  • Experience with AI/ML lifecycle management and MLOps practices.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and data pipelines spanning streaming ingestion, batch and stream processing, and API layers.
  • Develop and evolve data models, schemas, and storage patterns for a growing analytical data lake.
  • Build and maintain platforms that expose data, tools, and services to AI-driven applications and agents.
  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot workloads running on a Kubernetes-based cloud platform.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, deployment, and release processes.
  • Collaborate with data science, platform, and engineering teams to deliver scalable, production-ready solutions.
  • Implement automated testing, observability, and operational tooling, including metrics, logging, dashboards, and alerts.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, architecture decisions, and agile planning activities.
  • Drive continuous improvements in system reliability, scalability, performance, and cost efficiency.
