About The Position

The Senior Software Development Engineer will design and build AI platform systems used by Workday engineers, including LLM gateways, MCP registries, shared infrastructure, AI agents, and compliance tooling. The role helps define how emerging AI capabilities are integrated into the platform and provides technical leadership on a fast-moving team with high quality standards. The engineer will work directly with developers through office hours, Slack support, and the Champions program, incorporating their feedback into the tools and platform. The team builds infrastructure for code generation, AI-assisted code review, agentic workflows, and enterprise-wide developer tooling, as well as technical guardrails for responsible AI use.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years building and operating backend services or platform infrastructure in production.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript.
  • Hands-on experience building or integrating with LLM APIs, such as OpenAI or Anthropic, and familiarity with prompt engineering, evaluation pipelines, and model selection tradeoffs.
  • Robust understanding of AI security and responsible AI practices, including prompt injection, model misuse, data leakage risks, output validation, and operationalizing policy guardrails in production AI systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to drive alignment across engineering, security, and product stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience designing and building AI agents, fluency with agentic frameworks and patterns such as ReAct, and practical experience shipping reliable agents in production.
  • Experience building MCP servers, Claude skills, or similar tool-use integrations.
  • Comfort designing REST APIs and service-oriented architectures.
  • Experience with container orchestration such as Kubernetes or Docker and deploying services to cloud environments.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Understanding of enterprise security patterns, including authentication, authorization, SSO, and secrets management.
  • Exposure to observability tooling such as logging, metrics, and tracing, and a habit of building monitorable systems.
  • Comfort partnering directly with engineers who use the tools, including working with user feedback, support channels, and adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the AI platform layer, including LLM gateways, MCP registries, abstraction APIs, and shared infrastructure.
  • Architect and implement AI agents and automation to improve developer workflows, including code review, documentation, and testing.
  • Evaluate and integrate AI model providers, balancing cost, safety, and performance.
  • Track emerging AI models, tools, and frameworks, and recommend whether to adopt, evaluate, or pass on them.
  • Lead technical design for complex, cross-functional projects in partnership with Security, DevEx, and infrastructure teams.
  • Build observability and governance tooling to provide organizational visibility into AI tool usage.
  • Operationalize AI policy and compliance requirements within the platform.
  • Work directly with engineers using the tools through office hours, Slack support, and the Champions program, and incorporate their feedback.

Benefits
