About The Position

The Senior Software Development Engineer is part of Expedia Group’s Air Supply team within the Technology division. The team unifies and elevates the company’s air supply platform across brands and partners, strengthening integrations with airline and distribution systems to support trusted, high-converting, and cost-efficient air shopping and booking. The role owns and evolves mission-critical air supply services end to end, from technical design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization, improving reliability, scale, and traveler outcomes across the global air marketplace. The engineer designs, builds, and evolves backend services and customer experiences in Java, including system design, API design, and data modeling. The role develops maintainable, observable, and operationally sound backend components; collaborates with product, design, and partner engineering teams; and owns service and feature lifecycles, including testing, deployment, monitoring, and incident resolution. It also applies data-driven approaches to optimize performance, reliability, and user experience, and safely integrates AI/ML-enabled solutions where they improve outcomes.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent related professional experience.
8+ years of relevant professional experience building and operating production backend or full-stack software services in a team environment, with substantial experience in Java.
Proven ownership of backend services or components, including responsibility for design, implementation, quality, deployment, and operational health within a product or domain area.
Proficiency in data structures, algorithms, system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling, with hands-on application in Java-based systems.
Hands-on experience with modern web technologies, frameworks, and backend service architectures such as microservices and RESTful APIs.
Familiarity with using AI-driven tools or workflows to enhance developer productivity or service capabilities.

Nice To Haves

Experience designing and evolving multi-service or multi-component backend architectures in Java, including well-structured APIs, data models, and integration patterns across systems.
Track record driving technical improvements at scale for Java services, such as performance tuning, resilience hardening, or reliability engineering for high-traffic, latency-sensitive workloads.
Strong focus on backend operational excellence, including instrumentation, observability, alerting, and participation in on-call or incident response to improve long-term service health.
Ability to leverage experimentation, A/B testing, or analytics to make informed technical and product decisions and validate the impact of backend features and service optimizations.
Experience integrating or extending AI/ML-enabled capabilities into backend services, including responsible use of AI-driven components in Java-based solutions and guiding teams on safe and effective adoption of AI tooling for code quality, testing, and operations.
