About The Position

Lambda is hiring a Senior Software Development Engineer to build and operate software that automates the lifecycle of its network infrastructure, from data center build-out and device provisioning through ongoing operations. The role includes creating provisioning and zero-touch deployment systems for GPU-cluster network devices, configuration-as-code pipelines with testing and safe rollbacks, and capacity-planning tools using inventory, topology, and utilization data. The engineer will integrate automation with source-of-truth, inventory, and IPAM systems, and build APIs, services, and command-line tools for internal teams to request, change, and audit network resources. The position partners closely with Network Engineering, Data Center Operations, and platform teams to turn manual procedures into dependable self-service automation. The engineer instruments owned systems with metrics, logs, and alerts, uses operational data to improve reliability and speed, and participates in the on-call rotation for the team's automation systems and tooling. The position requires working from Lambda's Bellevue or San Francisco office four days per week; Tuesday is currently the designated work-from-home day.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
  • Production-quality coding skills and deep expertise in multiple programming languages.
  • Experience building automation or infrastructure tooling used by other engineers, such as provisioning systems, deployment pipelines, workflow engines, or internal APIs.
  • Solid understanding of distributed-systems design, including API design, data modeling, idempotency, and handling partial failures.
  • Strong engineering practices, including code review, automated testing, CI/CD, and git-based workflows.
  • Comfort using the Linux command line and understanding core networking concepts such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and IP routing.
  • Experience leading technical projects end to end, from design document through production rollout, and mentoring other engineers.
  • Clear communication with software engineers, network engineers, and operations teams, and ability to translate operational pain points into software requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing or operating data center networks, such as Clos/spine-leaf fabrics, BGP, EVPN/VXLAN, or ECMP.
  • Experience automating network devices from vendors such as Arista, Juniper, Cisco, or NVIDIA (Cumulus/SONiC) through APIs, NETCONF/gNMI, or Jinja templating.
  • Familiarity with network automation tools and libraries such as Ansible, Nornir, Netmiko, NAPALM, or Terraform.
  • Experience building on network source-of-truth, DCIM, or IPAM systems.
  • Experience building capacity-planning or forecasting tools, or working with large volumes of time-series telemetry.
  • Familiarity with HPC/AI networking, such as InfiniBand or RoCEv2, at GPU-cluster scale.
  • Experience running services on Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of data center power, space, and cooling constraints and how they shape build-out plans.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate software that automates Lambda's network lifecycle, from data center build-out and device provisioning through day-2 operations.
  • Build provisioning and zero-touch deployment systems that take network devices for new GPU clusters from racked to production-ready with minimal manual work.
  • Develop pipelines that generate, validate, and deploy network configuration as code, with automated testing, staged rollouts, and safe rollback.
  • Build capacity-planning tools using inventory, topology, and utilization data to forecast port, bandwidth, optics, and IP address needs.
  • Integrate automation with source-of-truth, inventory, and IPAM systems to keep intended and live network state in sync.
  • Create APIs, services, and CLIs for network engineers and other internal teams to request, change, and audit network resources.
  • Instrument owned systems with metrics, logging, and alerting, and use the data to improve reliability and speed.
  • Partner with Network Engineering, Data Center Operations, and platform teams to turn manual runbooks into reliable, self-service automation.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for the team's automation systems and tooling.

Benefits

  • Generous cash and equity compensation.
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their dependents.
  • Wellness and commuter stipends for select roles.
  • 401(k) plan with a 2% company match for U.S. employees.
  • Flexible paid time off plan.
