Senior Software Developer (One45 Team)

Acuity InsightsCalgary, AB
CA$160,000 - CA$180,000Remote

About The Position

We are hiring a Senior Software Developer to join the One45 team. One45 is a core product at Acuity Insights, utilized by medical schools across North America for managing complex aspects of health professions education, including clinical placements, rotation scheduling, evaluations, curriculum management, learner records, and accreditation reporting. The product has a long history, supporting tens of thousands of users annually and is deeply integrated into institutional operations. This role involves both maintaining and improving the existing product while contributing to a significant modernization effort. The team is evolving APIs, enhancing data access and integrations, rethinking workflows, and incorporating AI-assisted tooling. This is a unique opportunity to join at a pivotal moment, influencing the product's evolution and the team's practices.

Requirements

  • Comfortable stepping into code you didn’t write, building context, and improving things without assuming they need to be rebuilt from scratch.
  • Ability to think in trade-offs, balancing technical quality, business needs, and the realities of a system serving real users.
  • Comfortable working across the stack, with a particular interest in understanding what happens beneath the surface (data movement, service interactions, production issues).
  • See testing and quality as part of the work itself.
  • AI is already part of how you work, using tools like Claude, Copilot, and Codex to learn faster, explore ideas, write code, and improve work.
  • Develop the judgment to know when to trust AI output and when to challenge it.
  • Take ownership, ask questions, surface concerns, contribute ideas, and don't wait for perfect clarity before taking the next step.
  • Care about outcomes, not just implementation.
  • Comfortable occasionally stepping in when the situation requires it for production system ownership.
  • Canadian residency and valid work authorization.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in learning and working within the existing architecture, even without deep PHP expertise on day one.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve the One45 product, including customer-facing enhancements, bug fixes, and workflow improvements.
  • Contribute to modernization initiatives such as API modernization, evolving core modules (scheduling, placements, lottery management), and improving data access for reporting and analytics.
  • Incorporate AI throughout the development lifecycle, including implementation, testing, review, and documentation.
  • Participate in shared ownership across the platform, reviewing code, investigating production issues, refining requirements with Product, and testing features.
  • Collaborate closely with the Product Manager to shape solutions, prioritize work, and navigate trade-offs.
  • Lead larger modernization initiatives across the platform.
  • Help the team think through how new work fits into an existing system with significant history and complexity.
  • Review code and provide thoughtful feedback to move work forward.
  • Improve testing, reliability, and engineering practices over time.
  • Mentor developers who are earlier in their growth.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions while remaining close to implementation.
  • Help shape how modernization efforts and engineering practices evolve across the team.
  • Operate with a high degree of ownership, clarifying ambiguity, connecting work across teams, identifying risks, and driving initiatives forward.
  • Participate in shared support responsibilities, including occasional deployment activities, incident response, and coverage during key client periods.
  • Maintain limited coverage during the company-wide two-week closure in December if needed.

Benefits

  • Transparent compensation: starting salary between $160,000 and $180,000 CAD.
  • $3,000 annual learning budget.
  • Access to employee stock options.
  • Fully remote within Canada, with up to six weeks per year to work internationally.
  • Self-directed vacation (most teammates take 4–6 weeks annually).
  • Monthly Acuity Days (a collective Friday off).
  • Two-week company-wide closure each December.
  • Health benefits from day one for you and your dependents.
  • 2% GRSP matching program.
  • 16-week parental leave top-up beyond EI, available to all parents.
