About The Position

The Senior Software Build & Release Engineer for Voyager Lunar Systems owns automation of software builds, versioning, deployment, and delivery for the lunar lander program. The role reports to the Software & Controls Manager and is part of the Software & Controls Department. It is based onsite in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The engineer owns release engineering for flight and ground software, from pipeline architecture through final software package generation. The position designs and evolves branching and release strategies, builds and maintains GitLab CI/CD pipelines, integrates automated and manual test campaigns, and deploys and operates on-premises engineering infrastructure. It also owns Linux-based spacecraft flat-sat platforms, supports automated deployment and testing with Python tooling and Docker containers, and establishes build, test, and release standards across software teams.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of DevOps, build, or release engineering experience supporting robotics, spacecraft, embedded, or other mission-critical systems.
  • Hands-on ownership of GitLab CI/CD, including pipelines, runners, package registry, and releases.
  • Strong Python skills for pipeline automation, release tooling, scripting, and pytest-based test frameworks.
  • Experience with Bazel, particularly for multi-language C++/Python builds, remote caching, or migrating existing projects from Make/CMake.
  • Experience with Docker and Make/CMake build systems.
  • A track record of designing or significantly shaping branching and release strategies, such as GitFlow, release branches, semantic versioning, and promotion gates.
  • Solid Linux administration experience, including deploying and maintaining self-hosted engineering services.
  • Comfort serving as the primary or sole owner of infrastructure, with responsibility for architecture and hands-on implementation.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by ITAR.

Nice To Haves

  • Working proficiency in C++, particularly around build, test, and packaging.
  • Experience running simulation or compute workloads on HPC clusters using Slurm.
  • Experience with container registries and object storage, such as Harbor and MinIO.
  • Prior work in ITAR/CUI-controlled environments.
  • Informal technical leadership experience, such as mentoring engineers or driving cross-team adoption of tooling and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end release engineering for flight and ground software, from pipeline architecture through final software package generation.
  • Design and evolve branching and release strategies, including GitFlow, release branches, automated semantic versioning, and promotion gates for alpha builds, release candidates, and releases.
  • Build and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines to compile, test, version, publish, and deploy software; triage and resolve infrastructure-related failures and regressions.
  • Integrate automated and manual test campaigns into the release process so every build has a clear, auditable test record.
  • Deploy and operate on-premises engineering services, including GitLab and GitLab Runners, Slurm HPC clusters, Jira, Confluence, Harbor, and MinIO.
  • Own Linux-based spacecraft flat-sat platforms and work with test engineers on Python tooling and custom Docker containers for automated deployment and testing.
  • Set engineering standards for build, test, and release practices across software teams.
