Senior Software Architect (Technical Lead)

About The Position

Agile Defense is hiring a Senior Software Architect to lead engineering for its Honolulu team building Target Effect Pairing (TEP), a USPACOM Joint Fires capability built on the Maven Smart System. TEP provides commanders with AI recommendations that can be traced, explained, and audited, while inherently governmental decisions remain with a human. The program’s Lead Software Architect, based in the National Capital Region, owns the overall architecture and final technical authority. The Honolulu technical lead applies that architecture to working software, makes design decisions within its boundaries, reviews code, and coordinates Honolulu engineers with the Senior UX Designer, Product Manager/Fires SMEs, and the National Capital Region team. This is a hands-on lead role involving work across two locations, secure facilities, and integration work that may depend on government decisions. The role is based on-site in Honolulu with the USPACOM-based development team. Work is performed in secure professional office, Government, and technical development environments. Periodic travel may be required to support operational stakeholders and mission activities. The position requires TS/SCI eligibility and the ability to maintain required TS/SCI access. The listed salary range is $155,000–$200,000 per year.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to drive progress and create clarity in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.
  • Ability to maintain required TS/SCI access.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading an engineering team building distributed, event-driven, or microservice systems while remaining hands-on.
  • Experience working within an architecture owned by someone else and improving it through interface control documents, API contracts, or shared data models.
  • Experience building explainable and auditable software, such as decision-support or agent-orchestration systems.
  • Experience delivering software into secure or classified Department of War environments.
  • Experience leading engineers alongside designers and domain experts and turning their input into technical decisions.
  • Experience with Maven Smart System, USPACOM, or Joint Fires.
  • Technology experience with Go, Java, or Python; React and TypeScript; message-driven architecture; MCP; and API design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering for the Honolulu team and turn the program architecture into working software.
  • Make and document design decisions within the architecture established by the Lead Software Architect.
  • Review code and help ensure Honolulu and National Capital Region engineers use consistent interfaces, data models, and standards.
  • Coordinate engineering work with the Senior UX Designer, Product Manager/Fires SMEs, and the National Capital Region team.
  • Translate operator feedback into backlog items with a technical approach and estimate.
  • Resolve UX implementation tradeoffs with the designer before coding and raise questions about operational intent with Fires SMEs early.
  • Deliver software that deploys in secure government environments and supports traceable, auditable recommendations and timely recomputation.
  • Improve code review, reduce defects found in government testing, and help Honolulu engineers make sound design decisions independently.
  • Help hire and onboard engineers so they become productive within their first month.
