About The Position

Cabot Corporation is seeking a Senior Scientist to join its Inkjet team in Billerica, Massachusetts. This independent technical leader will drive complex, cross-functional projects that translate materials science into differentiated products, processes, and customer value. The work spans particle design, surface and interfacial chemistry, dispersion, formulation, rheology, transport, and print-system performance, using rigorous experimentation, mechanistic thinking, advanced data analysis, and practical project leadership. Carbon black expertise is highly desirable. The Senior Scientist will work with R&D, Technology management, Marketing, Commercial, Manufacturing, customers, and external partners to set technical direction and deliver projects aligned with business priorities. The role applies and advances modeling, AI, machine learning, high-throughput experimentation, laboratory automation, and advanced analytics to accelerate development and improve technical decisions. It also includes sharing technical knowledge, guiding junior employees, supporting intellectual property development, and maintaining safe laboratory operations and compliance with applicable SH&E and Responsible Care requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or other post-secondary technical degree and generally 10 or more years of colloid-based R&D or related inkjet industry experience; or a related technical master’s degree and generally 6 or more years; or a related technical Ph.D. and generally 2 or more years.
  • Advanced knowledge of chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related discipline, with the ability to connect scientific fundamentals to practical execution and business value.
  • Ability to organize and manage complex technical projects, coordinate cross-functional contributors, manage priorities and risks, and deliver against objectives and timelines.
  • Strong hypothesis-driven problem-solving, experimental design, classical statistical methods, modeling, data management, and interpretation of complex technical results.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and actionable recommendations based on reliable data.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate credibly with customers, technical teams, commercial partners, and senior management.
  • Willingness to learn and adopt new AI-powered tools for research, data analysis, workflow efficiency, and technical problem-solving.
  • Ability to adhere to safety requirements and applicable SH&E and Responsible Care procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Carbon black knowledge, including particle characteristics, surface chemistry, structure, morphology, dispersion behavior, performance relationships, and aspects of manufacturing.
  • Experience managing customer interactions or relationships in a technology environment for product, process, or application development.
  • Exposure to Python or similar programming languages for data analytics and workflow automation, and interest in developing these skills.
  • Direct people-management experience, prior supervision of employees, or experience effectively guiding junior technical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Independently lead and deliver projects of moderate to high complexity and scope addressing technical and commercial needs in materials, products, processes, and applications.
  • Define project objectives, scope, milestones, decision points, resource needs, risks, and deliverables with Technology management and cross-functional partners.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, and execute complex project phases; apply project-management practices and maintain current documentation.
  • Develop hypotheses and technical approaches using literature, mechanistic understanding, experimentation, modeling, and theory; adapt or introduce methods as needed.
  • Generate, organize, and interpret data using experimental design, statistical analysis, and digital tools; draw conclusions and make actionable recommendations.
  • Apply and help advance AI, machine learning, high-throughput experimentation, laboratory automation, and data-management approaches.
  • Lead or contribute to carbon-black projects, connecting particle properties, surface chemistry, structure, morphology, dispersion behavior, and manufacturing variables to product and application performance.
  • Build relationships with customers and external partners; understand needs, design technical programs, present results, resolve issues, and deliver value.
  • Prepare reports and presentations and communicate results, conclusions, risks, and recommendations to management, technical audiences, commercial partners, and customers.
  • Share knowledge through technical seminars, white papers, training, and other forums.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior employees and potentially oversee project work assigned to team members.
  • Follow intellectual-property standards, stay current with patent literature, identify opportunities for new IP, and support patent application preparation.
  • Ensure safe laboratory operations, participate in safety activities and investigations, and develop documentation and tools that support safe execution.
  • Follow SH&E procedures, standards, and regulations and support applicable Responsible Care Management System and RC14001 requirements.
