Senior Scientist I, Protein Analytics & Biophysics

Generate Biomedicines•Somerville, MA
•$125,000 - $165,000

About The Position

Generate Biomedicines is seeking a Senior Scientist I to join the Protein Analytics & Biophysics team within Protein Sciences. The role leads and contributes to analytical characterization, separation science, and biophysical workflows used to assess protein quality, stability, developability, and molecular interactions in support of discovery programs and the company’s machine-learning-powered platform. This is a hands-on, collaborative position that advances methods, develops fit-for-purpose workflows, troubleshoots complex experiments, interprets data, and responds to evolving program and platform needs. The scientist represents Protein Analytics & Biophysics on cross-functional project teams and may contribute to emerging technologies at the interface of protein analytics, molecular barcoding, mass spectrometry, and machine-learning-enabled discovery.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, analytical chemistry, protein science, or a related discipline with 4 or more years of relevant research experience; or an M.S. with 8 or more years of relevant experience. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in biophysical characterization of proteins, including stability, aggregation, self-association, polyreactivity, or related developability assessments.
  • Practical experience with protein separation science and chromatography, such as SEC, IEX, HIC, capillary electrophoresis, or related methods.
  • Ability to independently plan experiments, troubleshoot complex workflows, interpret data, and recommend next steps.
  • Method-development experience and ability to apply scientific principles to new analytical questions or improve existing workflows.
  • Ability to represent a technical and strategic function on cross-functional project teams and clearly communicate scientific conclusions, risks, and recommendations.
  • Strong documentation, organization, written communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to learn new assays and instrumentation and remain actively engaged in laboratory work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SPR or related binding technologies; experience with BLI or other kinetic and affinity-based assays is also valuable.
  • Experience with general mass spectrometry, proteomics, structural mass spectrometry, molecular barcoding, or related technologies, or willingness to develop these skills.
  • Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring colleagues, or leading method and workflow improvements.
  • Interest in working at the interface of experimental protein analytics, data science, and machine-learning-enabled discovery.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute hands-on analytical and biophysical workflows to assess protein stability, aggregation, self-association, polyreactivity, and other developability attributes.
  • Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot protein-characterization separation workflows, including chromatography and related methods.
  • Perform and expand binding analyses, particularly SPR and related kinetic or affinity-based technologies.
  • Contribute to mass spectrometry workflows for characterizing protein identity, molecular mass, heterogeneity, and modifications, and support integration of MS data with biophysical and separation-based measurements.
  • Develop and adapt methods for new sample types, protein formats, assay conditions, and project questions.
  • Design experiments, establish controls, interpret data, and recommend follow-up studies with increasing independence.
  • Work with project teams to define analytical plans, generate project data, communicate results and limitations, and support scientific decisions.
  • Represent Protein Analytics & Biophysics technically and strategically on assigned projects and contribute to cross-functional discussions and planning.
  • Provide technical leadership by leading method-development efforts, evaluating assays, improving workflows, and helping establish best practices.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and automated platforms.
  • Contribute to emerging approaches involving molecular barcoding, mass spectrometry, proteomics, and machine-learning-enabled data integration as program needs evolve.
  • Support training, knowledge sharing, documentation, and continuous improvement within Protein Analytics & Biophysics.
  • Collaborate with scientists across Protein Sciences, Technology, computational and machine-learning teams, and other partner functions.
