Senior Scientist I, LNP Platform
About The Position
We are currently hiring a highly motivated Senior Scientist I to join our LNP Platform team. In this role, you will serve as an independent technical lead for novel LNP formulation/process development of emerging tLNP drug product programs. This position will report into the Principal Scientist and based at our Worcester office. This role will involve hands-on laboratory work. All duties will be performed in compliance with AbbVie’s standard operating procedures (SOPs). Experience in lipid nanoparticle formulation and purification processes, or experience with process development, engineering and manufacturing of biologics drug product processes are highly desired.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead formulation, drug product, or process development projects from concept through execution and data-driven decision-making.
- Strong expertise in LNP formulation development, nucleic acid delivery, nanoparticle characterization, and/or lyophilized drug product development.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex formulation or process challenges and develop scientifically sound mitigation strategies.
- Experience providing technical guidance, mentorship, or matrix leadership to junior colleagues.
- Strong project management skills, including ability to prioritize work, manage timelines, coordinate contributors, and communicate risks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present complex technical data and recommendations to cross-functional and senior audiences.

Responsibilities
- Independently propose, design, lead, and manage novel technical projects focused on formulation, conjugation, purification, and process development for targeted lipid nanoparticle-based nucleic acid formulations.
- Serve as a technical lead for complex formulation and process development activities, including development of project plans, timelines, experimental strategies, risk assessments, and data-driven recommendations.
- Lead DOE-based experimental design, execution, analysis, and interpretation to optimize LNP formulations, and associated manufacturing processes.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior and associate scientists, including guidance on experimental design, data analysis, troubleshooting, documentation, and prioritization of project activities.
- Drive technical problem-solving and root-cause investigations for aberrant results, process variability, or formulation performance issues, and recommend scientifically justified corrective actions.
- Represent your project in cross-functional project teams, communicating technical strategy, progress, risks, and recommendations to stakeholders and leadership.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations, protocols, batch records, and SOPs, ensuring clear documentation of scientific rationale, experimental outcomes, and development decisions.
