Senior Scientist, Formulation Delivery Systems

CSL Plasma•Waltham, MA
•$126,000 - $157,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Senior Scientist, Delivery Technologies provides scientific expertise in the design, formulation, characterization, and optimization of delivery technologies supporting drug discovery across multiple functions and external collaborations. The role focuses on lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation, extrahepatic targeted delivery approaches, siRNA conjugates for tissue- and cell-specific delivery, and translational drug delivery sciences. The successful candidate contributes to CSL’s novel modalities portfolio and pipeline, serves as a subject matter expert in delivery approaches and LNP process development, and provides technical support across research, development, and manufacturing activities. This position is based onsite in Waltham, Massachusetts, five days each week, and reports to the Principal Scientist, Delivery Technologies. CSL does not provide relocation assistance or visa sponsorship. The stated base salary range is $126,000 to $157,000 per year; total compensation may also include incentive compensation and equity.

Requirements

  • PhD with 5 or more years of relevant pharmaceutical-industry experience, or MS with 7 or more years of relevant pharmaceutical-industry experience, in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nanomedicine, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Drug Delivery.
  • Ability to independently lead scientific projects and experience working in cross-functional research environments.
  • Strong track record in LNP formulation and optimization.
  • Expertise in nanoparticle characterization techniques, including particle size, encapsulation efficiency, and stability assessment.
  • Expertise in in vitro and in vivo evaluation of RNA-based delivery systems.
  • Understanding of cellular uptake mechanisms, intracellular trafficking, and endosomal escape.
  • Demonstrated experience with targeted LNPs and extrahepatic delivery platforms.
  • Experience with experimental design, statistical analysis, and data interpretation.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of medicinal chemistry principles related to ionizable lipid design, structure-activity relationships (SAR), ligand optimization, and linker chemistry.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and support CSL’s novel modalities portfolio and pipeline.
  • Participate in external due diligence by assessing delivery system suitability for various modalities, technical feasibility, and risk.
  • Lead the design, formulation, and characterization of LNPs containing siRNA, mRNA, gene-editing cargoes, and other nucleic acid modalities.
  • Design and execute Design of Experiment (DOE) principles in formulation screening.
  • Work on medium- to high-throughput formulation preparation.
  • Optimize formulation parameters, lipid composition, manufacturing processes, and excipient systems to improve stability and biological performance.
  • Develop and characterize targeted delivery strategies (t-LNP) using receptor-mediated uptake mechanisms, targeting ligands, and tissue-specific delivery approaches.
  • Lead the design and evaluation of ligand-siRNA conjugates for extrahepatic delivery.
  • Evaluate delivery performance through in vitro and in vivo studies, including cellular uptake, endosomal escape, biodistribution, and target engagement.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in delivery approaches and LNP process development, providing technical delivery-related support across research, development, and manufacturing activities.
  • Apply mechanistic insights to critical process parameters and product attributes through hypothesis-driven experimentation, robust data analysis, and problem-solving.
  • Provide scientific guidance and mentorship to team members.
  • Collaborate closely with Analytical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology teams.
