Valstad is rebuilding how ships are made. American shipbuilding is constrained by slow, labor-intensive production methods and a shortage of skilled manufacturing capacity. We are developing robotic production systems that can turn engineering data directly into finished steel structures, dramatically reducing the time and manual programming required to build ships. Our first platform combines industrial robots, automated material handling, welding, sensing and AI-driven manufacturing software to produce large ship panels and structural assemblies. Instead of programming each new part by hand, our goal is for the system to understand the CAD model, determine how the structure should be assembled and welded, and generate the robotic plan required to build it. This requires solving hard, practical robotics problems across motion planning, manipulation, calibration, perception, process control and real-world execution. The work does not end in simulation. The software you build will control large industrial robots producing steel structures in our Austin facility and, over time, in shipyards across the country. Our broader mission is to create the manufacturing technology required to restore and radically expand American shipbuilding capacity. Valstad is seeking a Robotics Software Engineer specializing in motion planning and manipulation to develop the algorithms and software infrastructure that connect manufacturing intent to reliable robot execution. You will work on the complete planning pipeline, including coordinate transformations, kinematics, reachability, collision checking, constrained Cartesian motion, trajectory generation, external-axis optimization and execution on real industrial hardware. This is not a role focused solely on calling existing planning libraries or producing simulation demonstrations. You will be expected to understand the mathematics and implementation details beneath the planning stack, diagnose difficult geometric and numerical problems, and validate solutions on large-scale physical robotic systems. The ideal candidate combines strong robotics fundamentals with production software engineering and hands-on hardware experience. You should be comfortable moving between mathematical analysis, rust/C++ implementation, simulation, robot-controller integration and debugging on the factory floor.
